Katana-ya ramen, an old institution in El Cerrito, has retired, and a new Japanese restaurant has taken its place. I met the owner awhile back at my work when he called asking about how to get rid of or recycle stuff, and we got into talking, and I found out he was taking over Katana-ya. He said to wait a couple of months before visiting since he was sourcing in better ingredients. Little did I know that he would retire the name Katana-ya and rename the restaurant Tokyo Feng ramen and sushi.
After several months, my family and i decided to go out and eat and wanted to try the new katana-ya. But surprise surprise.. gone.. oh well. Try Tokyo feng. We came in an hour before close so it wasn't busy at all. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. We ordered the black garlic ramen with egg, Tonkatsu ramen, beef curry, spicy tuna roll, and sushi dinner set c. Both ramen and sushis came out promptly after maybe 10-15 minutes. The curry came out maybe closer to 10 minutes later. They must have had to cook it fresh or something.
The tonkatsu ramen soup was savory and creamy with a good amount of noodles and ingredients/toppings.
The black garlic ramen was equally delicious but with a more earthy garlic taste. The char-siu roasted pork was in the thin side and a bit dry but was still good. There was a good amount of whole fried garlic in the soup, which was nice.
The sushi set C dinner had large portions of sashimi and 6 pieces of California roll. The roll was good and fresh. Typical California roll fake crab and mayonnaise combo. It also came with salad and miso soup. The salad and Miso soup were just ok.
The beef curry was really fresh and delicious with tender slices of beef with a bit of fat attached. The curry was a light reddish color, almost like tomato based but with curry seadoning added. There were large chunks of veggies in it too. The curry came with a small bowl of rice to go along with it.
The spicy tuna roll was fresh and delicious. It wasn't spicy at all for me but I can take a lot of heat. Sushi rice was fresh but needed a bit more vinegar seasoning.
Overall, it was a good first impression. The food was delicious, staff friendly, and attentive. ...
Read moreWhat a wonderful small business Japanese Restaurant in El Cerrito off of I-80. Discovered this place by chance by exploring the internet for "Restaurants near me"
This place has been here under two owners for 20+ years. Our server Tina said she's worked for this restaurant for 21 years!
The food is fresh and very good. The website has professional food stylist photos featured. When your dish/sushi arrives it looks spot on like the website and menu photos! That's pretty impressive.
It's a quite and relaxing atmosphere with a diverse clientele. Great for small groups. It's not a huge restaurant being located in a small strip mall. It's clean with no clutter or supplies in sight. Not even in the restrooms. Which is common for most small space establishments.
There was a high amount of pick up orders but the dinning room was busy for having only one server on staff for a Friday night.
It was also interesting to watch on the TV monitors different chefs in Japan preparing traditional dishes.
Please give this place a try if you haven't already. We highly...
Read moreFriendly service. Fresh sashimi. Chef Jason made beautiful sushi rolls and uni quail egg special. Miso soup was steamy hot. Lobster roll with mango and crab meat in soy paper wrap was refreshing. My favorite was the slightly torched butterfish walu. Great texture and delicious taste. Spider roll was also very tasty. Would come back to try their ramen next time.
Update 3/15/25: Tonkatsu ramen was excellent. I drank all the soup till the last drop. Chef Jason told me that they made their broth from 8 hour slow cooked chicken and pork ribs. No wonder is was tasty but not salty. Highly recommend it! Especially a cold rainy day. The soft boil egg was also very tender.
Updated 3/23/15: New owner Calvin and Katie were friendly and happy to create more items on the menu. Chicken Kara-age was one of the most authentic ones I’ve tasted in the Bay Area. Juicy and tender inside and crispy outside lightly breaded. Reminded me of izakaya in Tokyo. Chef Jason did it again with incredible sashimi plating fresh walu butter fish, white tuna, salmon,...
