Under no circumstance will I ever return to Roses's Kitchen at 1509 Chamberlayne Avenue due to extremely poor/awful customer service and inflated charges. They were out of several items, crab, blueberry lemon glazed cornbread, and later to find out macaroni and cheese. It was 9pm when I went so I tried to be understanding. I really wanted the crab stuffed salmon but they were out of crab so after a little more time I settled on the honey old bay salmon entree which was supposed to come with two sides ($25). The waitress comes back 15min later to tell me they just ran out of macaroni and cheese, that my friend got the last scoop, the chef wasn't making another pan and chose another side. She was very accommodating and patient with my besties order and requests but irritated with me although I'd been calm and understanding. But who comes to a soul food restaurant and doesn't order macaroni and cheese? I was not passive this time and let her know I was not interested in any of the other sides, that I barely wanted the broccoli and cheese I ordered as my second side. The waitress was agitated with me and walked away. She comes back 15minutes later with a partial entree and one side with it, broccoli with "white" cheese on it l asked the waitress to please make sure to remove the sweet tea I ordered they never gave me, yes no drink was ever given to me but they did give my friend a GreatValue bottle of water with a cup. The waitress was surprised they (her) never brought me my drink. She later brings a $34.06 bill for a $25 meal. I let the waitress know I was charged extra for a side when the meal came with two sides. No adjustment was made for the first side (the macaroni and cheese they ran out of) and they charged me a gratuity (dining room fee). My friend's bill was less than $30, and she actually had three sides (a replacement side because she didn't like the macaroni and cheese half of which she ate) with her $23 meal. I didn't even eat that broccoli concoction they gave me. It made no sense l got charged an extra $10, the waitress said the cheese was an upcharge because it was a handheld I showed her the menu where the entree came with two sides, its not a handheld and listed as a side with no indication of upcharge. She takes the receipt and pretends to go check with her manager who had coincidently just walked out so she couldn't do anything. Ilet her know this was an awful dining experience and I wouldn't be back. She didn't care nor apologized. $34 for salmon, broccoli...
Read moreI went to this place on yesterday for the first time. When we got insides we was greeted by a young lady and she told us that it was only one cook so it could be a 20-25 minute wait. We said ok because it was only two booths being occupied . She told us to have a seat any where except the VIP. We sat down at a booth and the table was dirty. We asked the young lady to clean it she asked us just to move to another seat cause the night crew didn’t clean it. We sat at another table and looked over the menu for a few minutes and then placed our order. My friend ordered the stuffed catfish with collards greens and Mac and cheese, I ordered the honey old bay salmon with Mac and cheese and cabbage. After waiting a long time my friend got her order. The fish was good, Mac and cheese was cold, collard had an interesting taste. She sent the Mac and cheese back to be warmed. I was asked again did I order the salmon, told her yes. She came back and said she had to place the salmon back in the oven so it’s well done. Stilling waiting she came back and said she waited for the oven to beep so she can take it out. This was over an hour and my friend ordered never got the Mac cheese back until later and it was still cold. She ate her food and we still waited on my order . I waited so long I just told them to cancel it. There were other people that came after me that placed orders and received food before me. We asked could she take off for the Mac and cheese since she never ate it and it was still cold, the young lady said no cause it comes with the combo. It seemed that only two people was working in that restaurant and they had to manage take out, door dash and whatever else. They charge a 15% gratuity and a 3% charge if paying with a card according to the receipt. I was then told as I was leaving that the cook never cooked my food because the young lady didn’t put it in. Did I mentioned where we sat the ceiling was dripping. Just poor service. Maybe if you are short staff you need to cut off DoorDash or close the doors. I did feel sorry for the young lady cause she was running the whole front alone. They do not serve any...
Read moreThe server and old bay salmon saved this from a 1 walked in the door for the 1st time yesterday and greeted fantastically. The young lady who took my order was very polite and friendly. Great salesperson too, got me to add the strawberry lemonade which was fresh and tasty. The biggest pro was that salmon, cooked to perfection, tender, sweet and delicious. Unfortunately the sides killed the meal. The bed of rice, possibly goya yellow was hard, either undercooked or reheated too many times, not edible. The greens would've been okay but came in on the salty side and I couldn't place the spice that was coming through, maybe west Indian but it didn't belong there. I salvaged it by rinsing and adding apple cider vinegar, disappointing. The Mac was lacking on the cheese, according to my wife. Sitting in a bed of oil, stringy not creamy. She doused with hot sauce to help it out. Sadly the salmon and lemonade can't justify the $62 tab. I really wanted to like the food since there were a few other items we wanted to try. For someone who's pescatarian and greatly limits dairy, its hard to find killer sides with no meat in them in RVA, which is mainly what i look for when dining out. Honestly on the fence about giving them another chance. I...
