We loved this location when it was owned by DAS. We have been doing our best to keep an open mind as they have transitioned it to become Castaways, but I do feel as though it has gotten slightly worse each time we've visited. They have taken out probably 10 beer taps, decreased the space available for seating by adding in a large closed-off office space and several rather large and unnecessary sculptures/ statue/figurines all over the place that don't seem to make a lot of sense. They've now totally closed off the kitchen, whereas it was open and mostly visible for guests to watch them prepare the pizzas and such.
The pizzas are hit or miss. Sometimes they're still very good, other times they're burnt and not very good at all.
The servers are mostly very young and often seem more interested in socializing amongst themselves than doing their jobs. This leads to many instances of waiting longer than you should have to for service.
Last night, I placed an order for a drink (we had already been served a flight, so I placed an order for a full drink), and after approximately 10 minutes of watching our server walk around, clear off a couple of tables, talk to other employees, go to the back room, and so on... we finally stopped a waitress to ask about my drink. It had. Been rung into the system, but our server had not poured the drink yet. The waitress did get it for us, but it did not make sense that we needed to even do that.
This is something that has happened several times (or something like this) when we have visited since it has...
Read moreOkay, now THIS is what this strip of restaurants has been missing: GOOD food. What a variety on this menu. We came back a few times this trip to eat at Castaway's. Everyone enjoyed their food. The Italian pretzel is a well-seasoned piece of pizza dough served with a marinara - ask for the spicy one if you like more a kick. The individual pizzas are a good choice and quite filling. We even tried the hush puppies with a side of boom boom sauce (they are normally served with ranch), but they're very good with no sauces at all. Our server was a young woman who had only been there for three days and she had her hands full. But she did a great job. Be sure to check out the wall behind the bar to see what kind of beers you can sample. We come to Singer Island every year when we pick our son up from camp over at JW Corbett and spend a little time unwinding, and this is definitely a spot where we'll return. One of the days we came back, my son (who ordered the carnivore the first night) ordered the mac n cheese pizza. He liked it very much, but thought there should be a cheddar cheese sauce underneath the actual mac n cheese and bacon. I also ordered the Caprese salad one day, and they serve it with roasted red peppers which I love. They could definitely offer a little more balsamic with it and it'd be even better. But everything here we...
Read moreFirst time going there (7.20.19) It's a very family friendly bar which is nice because most bars are not kid friendly, they have a foosball table and another section for kids to play in. They did have outside seating which was a big plus especially if you didn't want to be inside with the loud music. We chose to sit outside. Service was great. A gentlemen gave our kids samples of the craft sodas and the kids went crazy over it. The Mac and cheese pizza was out of this world. My friends had the veggie pizza with cauliflower crust and loved it. My younger son who is the pickiest eater on the planet ordered fries which he normally does everywhere we go. When I saw them come out they looked more like homestyle fries and not the "kid looking" fries so I was worried but surprisingly my son said they were the best fries ever. They have so many beer options and you can sample anything you want. The pizza sizes are definitely for one person and the crust is very thin which is great. The location is great especially if you are leaving the beach and want to eat something quick but good. Lastly, my husband said KVJ makes frequent appearances there too which is a plus. Overall,...
