Richee Freeze — Restaurant in Roanoke

This is a Roanoke classic. My pawpaw has been bringing me here since I can remember, and he's been going there for 50 years. The same family has owned it the entire time, I believe. They are CASH ONLY!

Food is a classic smash burger and malt shake style. Fries aren't heavily salted, but you can always sprinkle some on yourself. They also have ice cream and hot dogs, among other things. Their ice cream and homemade malt shakes are AMAZING it's the only place you can get a real, authentic malt shake anymore. I find most shakes at other establishments just taste fake.

More people need to support this small family owned business to help them update their building. The interior has not been updated at all, it's like a time capsule almost. It's honestly very run down inside, and very dark. I imagine they make just enough to keep the business afloat, but haven't had a chance to do any renovations because their customer base is mainly regulars.

The bathrooms are horrendous, and I believe the toilet in the woman's bathroom isn't even bolted to the floor, it nearly flipped over when I sat down. The walls and floors were disgusting in the bathroom as well, like it had never been wiped down really good... so just avoid the bathrooms all together lol.

The actual dining area was clean, I didn't see any signs of pests either. A woman came and wiped down the tables after every customer.

Awesome food. Been coming here for years. I love them but here recently I came with a young man who is a lawyer. This young man is 26 years old and graduated from Harvard. I won't write his name but he looks a little younger. He looks 19 or 20. The lady here asked him why he was wearing a suit and also commented the weather was hot. He said he was a lawyer, so thats why he was wearing the suit and just came from the office, which he did. He has an office close to Lynchburg. I backed him up on what he said. She kind of laughed and said sure. so what do you want to eat, buddy? calling him buddy. I told her before he ordered he really was a lawyer and she said ok whatever. This young mans picture and info can be found on google and he can also be found as a graduate on Harvards own website. A little judgemental, Richie Freeze. Next time don't be so judgemental because someone looks younger. That young man really is a lawyer. Really not understanding all the praise this place has gotten.

The service was fine, the staff were friendly- no problems there. The food and the environment weren't very good, though.

The burger and hotdog were fine in their execution for the most part, but they were INCREDIBLY bland. The fries were of the lowest quality imaginable, were underdone, and didn't have a sprinkle of salt on them. Maybe their boomer clientele appreciate the lack of seasoning, but I really didn't.

The decor and environment are OLD. This wouldn't be a problem if they took the time to clean every now and again. You could see decades worth of dust and decay on almost every surface. Apart from being really dingey, it was dark as a cave in there, too. I don't think putting up a couple lightbulbs would kill anybody.
