The place has a pretty decent rating on Yelp, Google and the My Happy Cow App. So I guess we went their with high expectations.
The restaurant is quite basic. Only takeout. Took us a while to figure out the various menus. There was one on the wall, one that was scrawled with hand and a menu card. Unable to reconcile them we finally turned to the server, a friendly but very busy lady, who quickly explained the offerings and went back to cooking. They have an open kitchen, so you can see the food as it’s being prepared. A sign of restaurants that follow high level of hygiene and are not scared to show their kitchens to their customers.
The dishes are on the expensive side considering that this is Roanoke (we get comparable dishes much cheaper in the DC metro area). The wait was a reasonable 15 mins. (Most of it was because of the fries we ordered).
So 15 mins. later we get our food bag and being famished eagerly open it to divvy up the dishes. Imagine our consternation at the size of the preps. The double cheeseburger was half the size of a typical McDonald cheeseburger and the spicy chicken was a small handful of seitan. Remember each of these dishes is an average of $14. Barely a mouthful. And not particularly tasty. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Very mediocre taste, fairly expensive prices and limited selections. Don’t think I will be going back there.
But thank you for keeping the vegan options going. Just wish it was a little better, little tastier and a little...
Read moreThe last time I came to Roanoke I had a very disappointing experience at a different vegan restaurant. I was a little nervous to try another place out but these guys really redeemed the Roanoke vegan food scene in my eyes.
The chili dogs were incredible. Really my favorite part of the meal. The chili had a sweetness to it that I wouldn’t usually like (I’m a spicy chili type guy) but it really works with the rest of the flavors.
The cheesesteak was also good. It wasn’t the best vegan Cheesesteak I’ve ever had, but it was tasty.
Got my daughter the chicken nuggets and onion rings. I tried them and I gotta say those are some incredible vegan nuggets. The onion rings were sold. The Mac and cheese won me over as I was eating it. At first I didn’t care for it, by the end I wanted more.
Only negative critique I had was the fries were kinda bland. Not bad, but we didn’t eat all the fries.
Other than that, it was a perfect experience. The atmosphere is really dope, the food was great, the owners seemed cool, and they have corn hole in the back seating area. Oh and the home made agave Arnold Palmer hit the spot something serious! Highly recommend this place if you find...
Read moreI was down in Roanoke for the Labor Day weekend and I made a mental note to myself the next time I'm in Roanoke, I have to check out the Screaming Vegan. I live in Northern, VA and I promise you, I would drive 4 hours again just to eat at this restaurant... yes it's that good. The flavors are out of this world and the owners and hospitable, pleasant, down to earth and have an amazing vision for their business.
The owner's testimony of changing his diet and being freed from Diabetes, etc is amazing, inspiring and encouraging. Health is wealth and I love that they are reaching and educating through proper food nutrition. I pray many blessings on their business and for them to expand into more endeavors and locations.
Now on to the food. I got the Oyster Mushroom Po' Boy... Oh...Mmmyy... Goodnnessss. I'm not exaggerating, that was THEE best Po Boy I have had, hands down. The seasonings and spices were a home run, it was almost criminal eating it lol. The cajun seasoned fries was delicious. I'm excited to try another item on the menu. Much love. 💜
PS: sorry no pics, I ate it...
