Stopped into Wong's Café as I was passing through from out of town.
The staff was very friendly, relatively prompt, and professional for a mom and pop kind of establishment.
The building was clean, lite nicely, actually warm and cozy.
Their menu selections compared to many other "Chinese restaurants" in Rochester and across the Midwest that I have been to tend -more- towards authentic Chinese flavors compared to others (though not truely authentic) which I feel tend towards more of a typical American taste. The menu choices certainly are what you would expect from a typical Chinese restaurant: egg rolls, lo mein, sweet and sour, sesame chicken, etc.
I ordered half an order of sweet and sour chicken, chicken lo mein, egg roll. The dishes were not very strong in flavor (a pro or con depending on your preference).
The lo mein noodles were very thin noodles; not what one would typically expect from most "Americanized" Chinese restaurants (e.g. thicker rectangular cross sectioned noodles) - many bean sprouts, long thin slices of carrot, mushrooms, etc. The sauce was thinner but plentiful and as mentioned previously a lighter flavor.
Sweet and sour chicken was NOT over cooked! This is excellent! Still soft but cooked through well. Many places tend to deep fry their Sweet and Sour till the pieces are hard and crunchy and hard to eat. These were fantastic texture wise but lacked the stronger sweet and sour flavor that I feel many including myself tend to enjoy.
All in all, Wong's Café is a solid establishment - not my favorite based on the dishes I sampled - but far from being bad by any means. I would recommend stopping by and making your...
Read moreWe ordered the barbeque pork lo mein and stir fry asparagus. Both tasted absolutely terrible, and came in tiny little to-go boxes that hardly held anything. I'd be mad about so little food, but I'm actually glad they didn't give us much, because we don't have to feel guilty about throwing away so much food otherwise.
Not only that, but when we called for a refund, they pretended to be sympathetic and offered us a discount on our next meal there. When we said that we wanted a refund and not more horrible tasting food? Turns out that only the manager can do that, and of course the manager isn't there. Not surprising! This is basically what all of the terrible asian restaurants in Rochester do; if they returned the money after every bad meal, they'd never break even.
I regret going to this place. Don't make the same...

Sam is a joy from the minute you walk in and she treats you like an old friend.
They can make most things gluten free. All of the food is prepared from scratch. They have gluten free soy sauce and can do MSG free. I'm gluten, dairy, and soy free and can eat so many things here. Tastes like good homemade Chinese food!
My absolute favorite is the chicken lo mein with rice noodles and extra veggies. It's the ultimate comfort food and it's the only place I can find it safe without making it myself. I've never gotten sick here, no issues with cross contamination. They make a fresh batch of noodles in a separate pan to order!
My husband (not GF) loves the Szechuan beef, beef and broccoli, and pad...
