It is bright and clean inside and the staff are very attentive. The salsa is delicious and the chips were fresh! I shared some Jose’s Nachos with my lunch companion, that included grilled chicken, Chorizo, Mexican rice and cheese sauce. We opted to leave the Pico off. Excellent! Full of flavor and a nice combination of textures! For my main I enjoyed a Steak burrito which was massive and stuffed full of steak, onions, green peppers, black beans and rice. It was delightfully drowned in cheese sauce and topped with some fresh sweet corn. 10/10 would dine here again! My friend pointed out to me as well that the plates and glasses were actually real glass which added to the great experience! Irvin our waiter was very nice and quick to refill our drinks and get us any other items we needed. :)

Got a recommendation to try Jose's and so glad we did. We sat at the bar - I got a frozen raspberry margarita and my husband got a Doe Equis. It was Tuesday so we both got tacos, chicken for me, carnitas for him. There is a salsa bar with mild, spicy, spicy chunky, white, tomatillo and a corn salsa. We put the corn salsa on our tacos along with hot sauce. Truly some of the best tacos we have had. Total bill: $23! Normally just the drinks would be that much! As for atmosphere, the florescent lights took that away. But that should not hold you back from going. The food and the service were that good.

Updating this review from recency perspective. They have since finished remodeling and man is this place nice. Food is fresh and always served in a massive portion size, nearly ridiculously so. Chips and salsa are great, and you can get your own. The service here is usually very good, but you will end up waiting a WHILE for your food. It is great food so it is worth it. Constant visits with long waits would be a major downside, but a once in a while? No big deal. Highly recommended!

What made us choose Jose's Mexican Grill was the salsa bar. Hubs and I were glad we did. We were immediately greeted and with a smile. The drink order was immediately taken as the gentleman was delivering chips and tasty salsa with a small kick... spot on chips and salsa. Since it was lunch, hubs got lunch Texas Fajitas that came on a small skillet but piled high. It came with obviously homemade beans and rice with a guacamole salad. He couldn't eat but half, since he got the street corn(he knows his street corn, since he's probably had it at 50+ restaurants in South and West Texas). He said the Street Corn was the BEST he's ever had! I didn't find anything I wanted on the lunch menu after seeing that they had Birria Tacos. The Birria Tacos did not disappoint! The plate came with 3 tacos, dipping sauce, onions & cilantro, and lime, as well as a side of rice. It was very good, with plenty of meat. It did need a little salt, but I'd rather add salt than it be too salty! Back to the salsa bar. The chips delivered at the beginning were a huge basket of fresh chips with very good salsa. Do yourself a favor and get a couple of the different salsas from the salsa station. You will thank me under your breath at first taste. My favorite was the guacamole salsa(creamy green one), while hubs liked the chipotle(bright orange one) best. Our drinks were never left more than 1/2 empty, and the waiter checked on us several times and even brought extra napkins twice as I was a bit messy with the Birria Tacos! We're so glad we found this on our travels... hope to visit...

The food at Jose's is amazing and you get large portions. The food hands down in 5 stars.

However.

The service is not reliable. Sometimes you get a server that's amazing and other times you are waiting forever for your food and drink. I've had two occasions in the last 6 months with a party of 4 where someone's order goes missing.

Additionally the atmosphere caused by the other patrons is terrible. I'm not talking about the bar patrons either. This seems to be the popular spot in Rocky Mount to bring your most uncouth family member. Kids that are out of control and don't listen...bring 'em. Family member that will embarrass you and snap at a server that is not yours and demand a refill they are here. I feel bad for the staff.

In the future I will be a...
