Just went to Max & Erma’s for the first time today. The place was full. As I walked in and was looking for a seat, as I saw a place in the back along the wall, a waitress loudly yelled “miss we can seat you up front!” I look briefly up front where there were no open tables to speak of, as I had already looked but turned that way anyhow…I walked back briefly but then turned and headed back because as I already saw and confirmed again, there were no open tables. I seated myself against the back wall and as I did a waitress presented herself and said the table I was at was “dirty”. So I scooted over one table. I then ordered a Long Island Iced Tea. I asked what was popular. She recommended the chicken tenders or any of the burgers. She also asked if I wanted an ice water with my drink. I confirmed that I did. Approximately 10 minutes later she brought my drink. This was after she had brought my water and after I had ordered a Garbage Burger. The drink was horrible. It turned out it was made from a mix, not made traditionally. This was not explained to me when I ordered. I asked the waitress when my food was delivered if she had made my drink or if a bartender had made it. She explained that the bartender had. I explained that it did not taste right. She explained that they cannot add 5 shots as they are at the airport. I said the drink does not ever have 5 shots in it. It has 2.5 shots. A 1/2 a shot of vodka, gin, rum, tequila and triple sec. Then is topped with coke and lemon juice. I asked her what I was charged and she said $17.99. I was beyond livid. Never again will I patron a restaurant that charges this for a drink that uses a premade mix and then charges $17.99. The waitress was extremely rude and did provide adequate service after this exchange. My total for my meal and one drink was $41. I tipped $5. For her...
Read moreI stopped in for a cocktail, before my next flight. I’m accustomed to ordering both food and drink to carry on my flights or consume at the gate. I ordered at the bar, and after learning they were ‘dine in only,’ as a single woman, wanting only a drink, not conversation nor male attention, I took my drink to the farthest table with a bench seat, beside the kitchen. I drank my drink and one of the kitchen staff came and sat at the table. No problem. A waitress walked by twice. A bar waitress came and went. No one approached me, I could not order a refill. So, I went to the bar to do so, planning to return to my bench in the corner by the kitchen. Then the waitress who had dismissed me on two passings approached me at the bar and aggressively told me not to sit at her table (that she neither approached nor served) if I was going to order from the bar, as she was ‘about to be busy and needed that table.’ Mind you, 1/3 of the tables were empty and I was literally sharing this table with staff next to the kitchen. It was a very disappointing exchange that left a very bad taste in my mouth. I personally own a service business and I personally have worked my entire career (44 years!) in service. My philosophy has always been to treat my clients with the same hospitality as treasured guests in my home. Also, I order expensive drinks and tip well, so I know that my ticket was well and beyond the average order. I understand it is the airport and the workers might believe in an endless supply of travelers- but, There are literally hundreds of choices in this airport, And just take a little pride in doing your job. Remember, kindness costs nothing. Meaness, in the truest sense of the word, tends to be...
Read moreDuring a recent layover at the Detroit airport, we stopped into Max & Erma's for a very late dinner. They were clearly getting ready to close but sat us anyway. My son commented on the smell in the restaurant - I worked fast food as a teen, and it reminded me of the dirty water after you washed the floor. That should have been my first clue, lol! Our service was decent, although our server was often off cleaning or sweeping or doing tasks to close. My son ordered wings - he said they were super spicy, which he liked, and pretty good. It went downhill from there. I ordered a rare burger - showed up almost raw. It was the Bodacious Bacon. It barely had one slice of bacon on it. And again, it was raw meat. I mean, my son and I like a rare burger, but this was a little too rare for us. So, I politely sent it back, and they eventually brought a new burger. It was definitely cooked better this time....but then, the French fries were totally cold. I don't think it was the same plate, just with a new burger, but I could be wrong. At this point, I was done. We split the burger, ate a few fries, and got our check. I told the server about the cold fries, and she was very apologetic - honestly, service and the wings are the only reason this isn't a two star rating. Oh, and the prices - holy cow! I get that we are a captive audience in the airport, but that burger is $13.99 on their online menu but more like $19.99 at the airport. So, NOT worth it. I wish we had gone somewhere else, and this has really turned me off to Max &...
