El Coco Pirata: A Tale of Tostadas, Sushi, and Strong Perfume
Let me take you on my culinary adventure at El Coco Pirata, where the shrimp are brave, the sushi is hefty, and the perfume is… unforgettable.
I kicked things off with a tostada de ceviche de camarón. Now, tostadas have one job: stay crunchy until the first bite. Mine? Collapsed under pressure before I even lifted it to my mouth. RIP, tostada—you crumbled faster than my willpower at a buffet. That said, for a place miles from the ocean (or river… who really knows?), the ceviche was surprisingly fresh. I could feel it digesting happily as I waited about five minutes for my main dish.
Ah, the main dish: a shrimp and bacon sushi roll. I wish I could tell you its fancy name, but honestly, it escaped my memory the second it hit the table. Flavor? Solid. Texture? Let’s just say each piece was so thick, I had to channel my inner python and swallow it in stages—three gulps per cut roll, minimum. My sidekick ordered a similar roll. If mine was thick, his was thicker. But like true champions (or rice-devouring pros), we powered through.
Service? Five stars. Our server was a hero. She greeted us with chips and salsa before we could even open our menus—as if she sensed we were starving beasts in need of immediate snacking. She made solid menu suggestions (though inspired by chef “mistakes”—a bold strategy) and took our order quickly. Only downside? The perfume. It was… a lot. My sidekick loved it. I, on the other hand, was wondering if I’d need a gas mask to smell my food.
Atmosphere: 4 stars. Apparently, there’s live music on Thursdays, played by “random dudes” outside. When I asked if they’re any good, our server admitted she’s never actually heard them. That was both confusing and oddly charming.
Final verdict? Go for the fresh seafood (even far from the sea), stay for the chips basket ambush, and maybe bring nose plugs if you’re sensitive to...
Read moreHad family in town and decided to treat them to dinner. We suggested this place because we are avid lovers of Mexican style seafood!! It was 4 adults and 3 kids. We were seated promptly by a nice server, but should have noticed things would turn after we were the only family eating there at 5 pm on. Thursday. We placed our food order, and the first issue was food was coming out one dish at a time, my in-law got his food and about another 10 minutes, his wife got hers, then 10 more minutes my wife, then the children and my dish was last. We tried the rice that came with the dishes and it did not taste well and did not smell good, we spoke with the server and she took the plate to the kitchen but came back with more rice, we asked if it could just be replaced with a simple salad, they said no! We continued to eat when this man came in from the outside, heavy breathing all over the table and said " Que es el problema" what is the problem, he said he was called by his staff about us not liking the rice. We confirmed we did not like the rice and he started to rant about how his family all eat this food, and this is what they like and they made it fresh this morning, getting more and more upset. He ultimately walked away, I saw him take a sample of the rice and go straight into the trash can with it. He never came back to apologize of anything! Hell he dint even introduce himself. The food issue we can deal with it somewhat, but the guy who is obviously a manager or owner we can't. Our bill was rather expensive and I paid with no fuss despite the dissatisfaction of the food, but I will never step back in the restaurant mainly due to the owner and will discourage any friends and family...
Read moreMy husband took me here for my birthday and let me just say we were all impressed. I had told him that this is one of the places I wanted to visit since they had sushi.
In my head I thought I was just going to get sushi rolls but I was pleasantly surprised, they have a wide selection of dishes and I just had to get myself a molcajete and a sushi roll.
The staff was incredibly attentive and very sweet. They even apologized for not having music on because there were guests who wanted it to be quite. Once they turned the music on they made sure it was at a level we were happy with.
The presentation with each dish was stellar, and the taste was out of this world! The portion size was also excellent. The prices are a little up there but you are truly paying for quality food. All the ingredients are fresh and everything is made to order.
The owner was nice enough to comp our desserts since it was my birthday. We weren't expecting that so it was definitely a lovely surprise. This place is definitely a diamond in the rough and we will be going again.
If you want something thats different and delicious I highly recommend going to this restaurant, you won't be disappointed! One thing to keep in mind is that the location is a little small and since everything is fresh you will be waiting a bit to get you food, even more so if they are packed, but believe you me it is...
