Friendly staff and nostalgia can’t quite make up for food quality. When i first moved to Michigan in 2000 there were quite a few of these around metro detroit, sadly this appears to be one of the last of its kind. From what we experienced maybe that’s not a bad thing… but nostalgia has a way of fooling you. So i didn’t grow up with these and the group i went with regaled me with stories of their childhood as this was the place to go. We had different experiences. Staff- Very friendly and inviting, you can tell they work hard.A+ Decor- To say it’s dated is one thing but this is a themed restaurant and i’m from what i could tell this theme is 1850 farm technology. Quirky is being friendly but still kind of cool to look at. C- Food- The t the beef carver should read , overcooked under seasoned and resembling every cafeteria you have ever eaten at, anywhere. Unfortunately for a place known for its beef the best thing was the turkey and gravy. Portion size was good but you could easily tell what comes out of a bag or a preseason mix and what’s made in house . Problem was the in house sides , Mac and Cheese were boring and flavorless, the beef was tough and unremarkable. I hate to say it but this reminded me of the quality of food my Dad would eat at his assisted living facility.- D Conclusion- If you want to step back into a memory i still say go for it . Visit for the decor and the staff but don’t bring your kids, give them better memories. Worth a visit but like the saying goes you can never go home again. D-

This place is so nostalgic for me. I used to eat here often when I was a kid. When I moved back to the Detroit area after living across the state for 40 yrs, I was thrilled to see the Woodward Ave. restaurant still open and it hasn't changed a bit! Why fix what's not broken? They're famous for their hot beef dinners. The roasted beef is carved right in front of you, and they give a LOT! I mean, they pile 6 to 8 slices on your plate! It's the only thing on your dinner plate, and then you move on down and pick out your potato and veggies and whatever sides you may want. It's Cafeteria style, but there are servers who carry your tray to your table, check on you, and clear plates from your table. The servers are Johnny on the spot with service, too. I always get an ala carte shrimp cocktail when I go because it's only 5.40, and it's an actual small salad of greens ( not all iceberg ) with 5 big shrimp for 5.40! In this Pic of my dinner, you see the baked Scrod with crunchy panko topping, broccoli, potato salad, and shrimp cocktail. All for 16.40. Ya can't beat that.

A blast from the past or time capsule, you choose. It’s been over 10 years since I visited last. For some reason I was thinking of this and the old Wyatt and Luby cafeterias. Friendly and helpful staff. While the atmosphere is old, it’s well maintained. This place is a nice option for ready to eat food cafe style. To me the food was tasty, but not necessarily memorable. I liked everything but the dessert, which tasted like it had been on the shelf for a long time. I gave this place 3 stars because they food tasted average and somewhat pricey in comparison to quality. I’d rate this place as 3.5 as it was very clean, great customer service, but the food falls below peak performance. A honorable mention for effort.

Zero stars. This place does not know the meaning of customer service. They treat the customer like they are liars! They do not bother to tell people what time they close when someone places a to-go order within a half hour of closing! We were at the hospital down the road and had placed a to-go order over the phone. They never told us what time they closed when we asked if the order would be ready about 8:15, and they said yes. We showed up to get our to-go order a few minutes after closing. When we called we were given attitude by a girl who answered a work phone by saying hello. I explained the situation and she asked me to hold. Then she told me that they had already closed down the register and that they could not help us. I ask if they had already thrown away the food and she said no, then she paused and said yes. So had they thrown away the food, or were they already eating it? So i called back and spoke to the manager, he was just as rude! He told me that the person had told my sister-in-law what time they closed and that he was standing there for the conversation. I know that they had not, a lie on his part. Then he proceeded to tell me that there was nothing that they could do for us. Now, as a retail business associate with over 15 years of experience, I know that you can easily ring up a meal the next day, or simply add it to your deposit. It is not that hard! I work in customer service and I have many problems with this.

  1. DO NOT ANSWER A WORK PHONE WITH HELLO!
  2. DO NOT LIE TO A CUSTOMER!
  3. DO NOT CALL A CUSTOMER A LIAR!
  4. IF YOU WORK IN CUSTOMER SERVICE, LEARN HOW TO TREAT CUSTOMERS!
  5. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK WITH CUSTOMERS, GET OUT OF THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS! In conclusion, this place may have good food but I could not tell you because their lack of customer service resulted in me not getting dinner! Do not eat here, go somewhere that treats a customer how we are meant...

I recently dined at Sign of The Beef Carver (SOTBC), and I must say, it was an absolutely outstanding experience! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a cozy atmosphere. The menu had a fantastic variety of options, but the star of the show was undoubtedly their mouthwatering roast beef.

The roast beef at SOTBC was cooked to perfection, tender, and bursting with flavor. It practically melted in my mouth. The accompanying sides were equally impressive; the mashed potatoes were creamy, and the gravy was heavenly. Every bite was a delightful journey of taste and texture.

But what truly set SOTBC apart was the attention to detail in creating the perfect dining experience. Not only did they serve incredible food, but they also had the Lions game playing from 7:30 to 8:00 PM, making it the perfect spot for sports enthusiasts like myself. Watching the game while savoring their delectable dishes added an extra layer of enjoyment to the evening.

And speaking of their dishes, I must mention the baked Scrod. It was a delightful surprise on the menu. The Scrod was cooked to perfection, flaky and flavorful, with a tantalizing seasoning that left me craving for more.

If you're searching for a restaurant that combines top-notch food, a welcoming ambiance, outstanding service, and even a sports-friendly atmosphere, Sign of The Beef Carver (SOTBC) is the place to go. It's not just a restaurant; it's an unforgettable culinary and entertainment experience. I can confidently say it's the best restaurant to ever exist, and I can't wait to go back for another...
