We were shopping in Old Sac and we couldn't find a place to eat. We were going to be leaving old town and heading to the airport to fly back to Phoenix. We were looking for someplace to eat before getting on the plane, we called Huckleberry's at 2:25 to see if they were open. We were told on the phone that they closed at 3. We asked them if we arrived at 2:45 if we would be able to be served, and that we were a party of 5. They told us yes, that we would be served, so we drove over and entered the restaurant at 2:40. We were seated by a friendly hostess, but our table had a clear view of a booth that contained several employees sitting at it. Our order was taken at 2:50 and our food arrived at or table at 3:25. When our food was placed on the table, an employee who was sitting at the booth yelled out loud across the restaurant "Tell them to shut down the kitchen". The employees in the booth continued to stare at us from the time we were seated, until the time we left. It was blatantly obvious that they were extremely annoyed that we were there. The food was amazing, and extremely delicious. But I have never felt so unwanted or uncomfortable in a restaurant in my life. We definitely entered the restaurant just before closing time, but we did enter 20 minutes before they closed. We all ordered quickly, and ate and got out of there. We just needed something to eat quick before getting on the plane. As we walked out of the restaurant, the lady that had yelled to shut down the kitchen was standing by the front door. We walked past her as we left, and she did not say a single word, but she did give us quite the "look". Not a single good bye, not a thank you for coming, NOTHING... She locked the door behind us as we left. As much as I loved the food and I really thought the environment and restaurant was super cute. I would have to say that I will never return here and I will not be recommending Huckleberry's to anyone that I know. As a former food server and bartender, I seriously know how great the end of a shift looks, and how much you want to get out of there and go home. But honestly, it doesn't matter if we would have walked in at 2:59, customer service is essential.... Never never should a customer be made to feel unwelcomed. Maybe it was not the best choice on our part to come in right at closing time. There were others in the restaurant eating when we arrived and entered. But the restaurant closed at 3pm, not 20 minutes before 3pm. Maybe consider your customer service in the future. If you're open, you're open.... This definitely would have been a 5 star review with a little kindness and friendliness from the staff and employees. Our server was great, and we tipped well. The booth of employees staring at us and making remarks was the only issue we had. But it completely ruined our...
Read moreWife ordered breakfast from here today. We got crab Benedict, chicken and waffles, beignet, and a couple coffees.
I cannot speak for the atmosphere or service as this was an online order that was delivered by Uber Eats (bad company) even though the order is placed through the store’s site.
Crab Benedict is a large crab cake on a barely toasted or untoasted (soggy) English muffin. It was fine. The potato side was steamed potatoes that had a trace of either previous burnt bits or a failed attempt to make them into hash browns/country potatoes. The primary flavor of the potatoes can be described as lightly salted, which is better than over salted but fails to capture the seasonings of southern style cooking.
The chicken and waffles resembled KFC extra crispy chicken and the driest waffle. It also came without syrup which is unusual. We did get butter and what appeared to be two types of ranch and what should have been remoulade but tasted like October’s mayonnaise. I guess they think people want chicken dips for chicken and waffles instead of syrup.
The beignets were more like dinner rolls than the delicious French fried dough rolled in powdered sugar than many places around Sacramento can do competently. They are dry, flavorless, and improperly made. They did come with sauces, but I’ve never put raspberry sauce on a dinner roll and I’m not starting today. They are large as that’s a 9 1/2” hand being overshadowed by one, but that doesn’t make them good.
Finally the coffees: a mocha and caramel(?). The have the appearance of mud puddles and the flavor of watered down gas station coffee with a little coffee mate added. Despite my critique of their other items, this was the low point of the meal. I couldn’t even call these proper coffee, and they definitely are not espresso style drinks as a mocha is. Brewing Folgers at home is likely to give you better coffee than whatever this was made from.
There appear to be several of these restaurants around Sacramento, and they are a blight on an otherwise decent food scene for our fair city. If you can afford another $4 per person, go to a real southern style restaurant for the same items. If you cannot, any diner style restaurant (including Dennys) is a better breakfast choice. And if you cannot afford more but desire southern style food, buy a basic waffle maker and cook some chicken tenders from the grocers freezer for a better experience than this...
Read moreI stopped in after checking the wait time on Google. After checking in, I was told about 10 minutes. Behind me was another solo diner and behind him was a female solo diner. We all waited inside because someone outside thought his stereo should be set on 9 for all to hear in the whole parking area. The last solo diner was seated before me. The second solo diner was seated before me. I thought that was strange but I went with it. I ordered the eggs Benedict crab cakes and instead of the English muffin, I requested the fried green tomatoes. I have ordered this before at other sites. I even said if they cannot do the fried tomatoes regular tomatoes would suffice. I asked the poached eggs be medium. I would like some liquid yolk but not the whites a runny uncooked mess. I also did not want the yolks cooked hard like a hard boiled egg. I waited for the order placed. The order came out and the eggs were cooked perfectly medium no running whites, the yolk looked like it had some softness to it and a little sauce. The crab cake looked good. There was no tomato in place of the muffin nor the avocado. I sent it back for it to be finished. I waited some more. The order came out. Fried green tomato looked good, crab cake still the same. The egg had been shoved to the center between the two. The yolk was completed cooked hard. More sauce was added to drench everything and they had put the balsamic on top. No avocado to be seen. I told the server “Samantha” that this was wrong. She proceeded to tell me I had asked for hard cooked eggs. I repeated my order and she disappeared without taking the plate. I went to host stand and asked for a manager. I went back to my seat and waited. They were busy, I understand that but there should be two managers on duty. Samantha was working hard but she could not make up for the kitchen staff mess up, the hiding it and adding more “stuff” on top. The only thing I could tell her is don’t tell a guest what they ordered. If you don’t understand then clarify it. My eggs came out perfectly the first time. Being left possibly under a warmer finished cooking them. Shoving them to the center to hide it and not on top as usual presentation is a red flag. No one to talk to about an issue tells a guest that you don’t care. I gave two stars for initial introduction. I left money for my coffee and a tip. The mess of a dish still...
