I’ve always loved Mediterranean food but this experience was just unbearable. Today (July 10, 2021) I was craving for one big lunch and saw this recommendation from google map since I’m just close to the vicinity. So I ordered a takeout chicken kebab and falafel plate. When I arrived home and excited with my big lunch, I was hurrying to get a bite with the smokey-spiced chicken and then I realized that some cuts of the chicken were undercooked and later I saw a hair strand in one of the cuts. Immediately, I threw that box away. But I was really hungry that I thought I’d at least give a try with the falafel plate. But it was worse, too - it was as hard as a rock and literally you can tell that the falafels were old stock that probably were just reheated over a microwave. I’m really disappointed about this experience and I feel so sorry to have wasted so much food. But I guess it’s my moral responsibility to get this documented and make everyone else aware. Sorry Black Sea (Snelling branch), this is the first and last...
Read moreI've been a fan since they opened many years ago. It's a tiny place with no more than 20 seats crammed in. My first introduction to red lentil soup (delicious!) was there, and it opened a new world of flavors to me. My go-to is the Black Sea Combination - a sampler of boldly spiced meats (doner, kofte/meatballs, kebab, etc). Their tsatsiki is thin and garlicky and I love it -- I would drown everything in it if the food didn't already have such good flavor. When I get the doner (Turkish gyro) pita sandwich, I do use a lot of tsatsiki because it's thin and runs down into the filling. Be strategic in adding sauce so you don't end up with a soggy pita filled at the bottom with sauce. I also really liked the veggie combination, and spinach with egg, though it's been a while since I strayed from the Black Sea combo. Easy to overlook, the rice pudding is a simple, light-feeling, refreshing sweet treat. The serving size is about a pint, but I...
Read moreThis tiny little gem is extraordinary, both in food and service! There's a good reason that all the Hamline college kids frequent here like crazy -- Great prices paired with awesome food. The shop space is small and a tight squeeze, especially in winter, but its worth getting sardined for maybe five minute or so at most; Service is fast. The owner is really nice and knows people by name who go in often.
I almost always get the gyro plate to-go, and you get two pita wraps, a side of good fries, onions, sauce, and best of all... a HEAPING pile of gyro meat, no BS what-so-ever.
I can always have two overflowing gyros, have a few "sneak-slab" bites, and I still have a good amount leftover (which I like using in scrambled eggs or lunch wraps). The whole thing is like $7 or so and I...
