This by far one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at any Asian restaurants in the twin cities. Wife and I were there for a quick lunch and were shocked no one was eating there except two other people when the reviews were so promising. We got seated and ordered the spicy wings, chicken curry and a beef stir fry with veggies. I was there for lunch and had to hurry back to work within 45 mins so I was afraid I wasn’t going to make it in time. After 10 mins of waiting the wings came out and I was relieved that some of the food started coming out. We had a couple wings each And I noticed that their sugar in their sauce haven’t dissolved yet. It seems they just threw in some sugar with some other sauce and quickly stirred it and mixed it with the wings. then the rest of the food came out within 5 mins which I was surprised in a good and bad way. Good way was obviously I probably won’t be late for work and the bad was that I was surprised the food was cooked that quick. As soon as the waitress handed the beef stir fry over my wife had this funny look on her face but didn’t say anything. The curry was placed in front of me and I started to take a sip of the curry. It was so sweet I wasn’t sure what I was eating. Never have I had a sweet curry soup like this from any Thai or Asian restaurant that served curries. I decided to try the beef. I looked at the plate and noticed the sliced beef was very dry so I took a bite of a piece of carrot first. It was not even hot like it came out of a wok or pan. It was lukewarm, at best. So I took a bite of the beef and it was the same but had this rotten smell like food left on the counter for days. I immediately spit out the beef on a napkin and brought he dish back to the kitchen and I told them it was cold and not fresh and the meat tasted old. We didn’t finish the curry either since there were only 4 pieces of chicken breast and a few slices of bamboo shoot. The chicken wasn’t even warm in the center either.
I’m sorry for all you other customers that had eaten here and thought it was the best Thai restaurant in the twin cities. Please venture to other Thai or Asian restaurants first before crowning this the best place. Unless you like over sweetened and microwaved food from days ago. Never ever eating here of their other place...
Read moreGracious. Some of the vitriol spewed here is absurd. I've been coming ToT for over twenty years. The service has always been slow, but who cares?! If you want fast get yourself a disgusting burger at any fast food joint. The food though....I've had Thai all over the Twin Cities, I've had Thai all over the country, I've had Thai abroad (although not, sadly, in Thailand. Hoping to remedy that in the near future) and the Thai here is AMAZING. I've loved their pad thai for decades, and consider it to be the best in the metro area. The fact that some places use ketchup in their pad thai?! I shudder to think...The papaya salad is amazing, the holy basil stir fry (pad ped bai kra pow) is deliciously fragrant and redolent of the holy herb, the vegetarian eggrolls are out of this world! Curries: delish. The only curry I like better is the (spry, jungly) green curry at Naviya's, but the prices at ToT frankly can't be beat. In the many times I've been there I have never seen a bug of any kind, and over the course of twenty years I can tell you, I've been there plenty. It leads me to disbelieve the (often, poorly written) reviews complaining about such things. If you'd like a leisurely meal, while you enjoy conversation with friends, or perhaps a chapter or two on your kindle, if you adore Thai food made with heart (did I mention the time the lovely elderly woman who, I believe creates the dishes there, offered me a taste of something she was working on? No? Well, she did and she was charming and the dish was divine), if you want a dining experience which captures your gustatorial imagination rather than a callow, hipster hangout, please do visit Taste of Thailand. If not, off you go to whatever Uptown eatery is currently offering pad thai slathered in...
Read moreHorrible experience! We have been going to this restaurant for years. Not anymore. Yesterday, my husband and I went. I ordered wine and the server informed us that since she was a minor she could not serve us any. She told me water was better for me. We ordered. I always ask for a substitution on one of the dishes, the server told me it could not be done with tofu because tofu tasted bad in that meal. I said I had it before, she said she would ask the cook. She came back a couple of minutes later and told me the cook could not do it with tofu. Fine. I ordered something else with fresh tofu, she brought it with deep fried tofu. She came later and told my husband his dish, which contained tofu, could only be prepared with chicken. He agreed. She brought the dish without the cucumber salad, as stated in the menu. She said it did not come with salad. We showed her the menu and she said it was weird since she had never seen it served with a salad. She said she would ask the cook. She came back a couple of minutes later and told us the cook has never prepared it with salad. I told her she should discount the salad off the price of the dish since all my husband got were a couple of chicken pieces with sauce. She took his meal off the bill. I am still so mad when I think about it. I will never go back there. The meal tasted very bad, possibly the bad service had something to do with that. We gave her...
