As a Turkish-Minnesotan and lifelong lover of döner, I wanted to share my honest review of this restaurant, previously called Spicy Feta and, before that, Naughty Greek. I was so excited to try their German-style döner, and overall, it was pretty good!
The side ingredients were excellent and reminded me of the döner I enjoyed growing up in my hometown in Türkiye. The sauces were also on point—especially the muhammara, which was absolutely delicious. A huge plus: the döner meat isn’t one of those pre-manufactured skewers, and that alone deserves 1,000 points. The bread that came with the German Döner bowl was also amazing, just like it is in Türkiye.
That said, the meat was a bit dry, which I hope can be improved because it shouldn’t be too difficult to fix. Next time, I’ll order extra meat (for an additional $3), as I agree with others that the regular döner contains a little too much salad&rice and not quite enough meat. I hope that on future orders, the meat will be more tender and juicy.
On a side note: I really don’t understand the obsession with the word “naughty.” There’s no need to sexualize food. Names like The Döner Shop or Döner Corner would have been great alternatives, in my humble opinion.
All in all, I’m glad this first time trying Döner from here wasn’t a total disappointment, and I appreciate the effort to bring döner—and also German döner—to the Twin Cities. I look forward to coming back!
Lastly, I was so excited to try the döner that I completely forgot to take pictures. I’ll be sure to snap some and add them to my...
Read moreAn unfortunate change to a wonderful St. Paul establishment. Spicy Feta was previously the Naughty Greek, a Twin Cities establishment. The best Greek food in the area, hands down, and enjoyed by many. When the Naughty Greek was transformed into Spicy Feta, there was hope that this moniker would remain, but it was not to be.
Spicy Feta seems to have taken the dishes that made the Naughty Greek so beloved and bastardized them to save a buck. The pork gyro and "naughty fries" have been irreparable changed, for the worse. Gone is the slow roasted, hand prepared, donner pork of old, and instead it has been replaced with Sysco gyro slabs that can be found on any street meat cart. The fries were once thin, crispy, and seasoned to perfection, but have been replaced with frozen grocery store fries that are so thick they remain cold on the inside even after a fry. Even the quality of feta and chipotle mayo that went atop the fries has been lowered. (And somehow prices went up?)
Both these dishes are staples of any casual Greek spot, and if their quality is any indication, avoid the new and "improved" Naughty Greek at all costs. They had pocket aces and chose to fold. "Why mess with perfection?" I asked myself over and over as I struggled to finish the most painfully mediocre gyro I've ever eaten.
To the new owners, I hope the extra money saved in food costs is worth all the customers that you'll inevitably lose with these chances. Best of luck, and see y’all at the...
Read moreI can honestly say I didn't see this place coming at all! In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it storefront lies some of the best Mediterranean-casual food I've had in a long time!
While finding a parking spot might be a nightmare, the restaurant greets you with delicious scents and the sounds of a staff working efficiently to put your meal together. The kiosks in the front make checking out the menu and ordering an easy experience, and once your order has been put in, you can hang out in the comfortable atmosphere for a while. No, this isn't a revelatory visual experience, but the food here is a revelation.
I ordered the Apollo Spice wrap, and it was so delicious and thoughtfully constructed. There's a heat to this pseudo-burrito that makes you want to come back for another bite after you've cooled off. The side of rice gave some reprieve and additional flavors.
Truly, this was just a great lunch for a reasonable price. My wife and I were able to share this meal, so at $10 a person, I bet you won't find anything else in the area of that quality at that price.
We will certainly come back...
