BUBBALA’s in San Anselmo: The best Corned Beef Sandwich in the entire Bay Area! Excellent Potato Salad! Huge thick fries that are family sized portions. Homemade Apple Pie is as good as Grandma’s assuming she’s a phenomenal baker. They just opened so we haven’t tried everything yet but we def will! I moved from LA in 1984 so I’ve been spoiled by Canter’s, Nate n Al’s & Langer’s & I’ve literally been looking for FORTY years for something comparable. We’ve even ordered from Katz’s Deli in NY for home delivery because we were that desperate. It was OK but for the freshest bread & meat that almost melts in your mouth, there’s only one place, BUBBALA’s at 906 Sir Francis Drake, San Anselmo, CA 94960 in the Safeway Hub Shopping Center! Greg, the owner truly delivers w perfect portions & absolutely top quality at reasonable prices! We tried Loveski in the Marin Country Mart (quality was good but portions were slider sized & pricy considering the sizing), Wise and Sons in SF (quality, sizing & prices were OK), old David’s in SF (which again was OK but touristy), Saul’s in Berkeley (again just OK at best) so BUBBALA’s just blew us away on all the important metrics with all excellent marks in quality, quantity & pricing! We will be regulars! Atmosphere was very friendly but only got 4 stars because it’s a small space & only limited hours on the weekend which might change after this current...
Read moreI was praying that this place would be something like the New York Jewish delicatessens that I grew up in. I give them credit for trying, but so far I am disappointed. I judge delis by their corned beef sandwiches which are difficult to get right. Bubbalas missed badly. Their corned beef was flavorful but it was impossible to chew. It was thickly sliced. It resembled the corned beef that some people eat with cabbage. For sandwiches, corned beef should be sliced thin and agains the grain so that it can be chewed. I could not chew it so I took it out of the sandwich and tried to cut it with a knife. Again I failed. I must say that the rye bread was excellent, which suggests that the restaurant has some hope. The people preparing the food at lunch time did not appear to be familiar with the Eastern European style of cooking. It would be a step forward if this restaurant could hire at least one cook who has worked in a real Jewish deli. I must also say that I expressed my disappointment to the proprietress who immediately apologized and offered to refund my money. I will return and give them a second chance. My burning desire for true deli food compels me to hope...
Read moreOur party of five had an age range of 20 - 87. Owner Greg took our order indoors next to his grill. Our table was outside the front door and beneath a roof overhang. It w he as perfectly warmed by a mid-winter CA sun. A very short wait later, Greg’s helpful wife brought our drinks. Soon after, she served our delicious food. A tasty plate of four cheese blintzes with cups of sour cream and strawberry compote was our shared appetizer. Absolutely yummy!
Every sandwich, pastrami, Smoked tri-tip, corned, beef, turkey and reuben were so good, we traded many haves around the table.
Within the hour, we were all on Mt. Tamalpais doing a two hour walk around Phoenix lake.
We suggest that you also enjoy this restaurant and...
