When it's my turn to pick a place to eat, i don't want chain restaurants. I want good, local joints that take pride in their food. The staff at J's was welcoming, extremely friendly, and helpful. Our waiter, and i believe he's the owner, made sure everyone ordered something that would make them happy. You aren't going to leave there hungry that's for sure. First impression of the food was a bite of Mac and cheese. It was so good and got us excited for everything else that came to the table. Every dish we had smelled amazing and was full of flavor. We had garlic/parmesan chicken wings, fried fish and shrimp, greens, potatoes/onions, fried okra, red beans and rice, mac and cheese and cornbread.The okra was nothing special, but the rest of the sides were fantastic, especially the potatoes/onions and cornbread. I could of had 2 or 3 more servings of the potatoes. The chicken wings were a flavor explosion in your head. I'm very glad my daughter didn't finish all of hers. The shrimp were large and very tasty, but the breading was a little soggy. Normally, i prefer small pieces of fish when i order fried catfish because they just seem to be crisper. This was a large fillet and was nice and crispy all the way around. I really liked the fried fish, but it had a flavor i couldn't quite pin down. I added a little Louisiana hot sauce to it and their homemade tartar sauce, and never looked back. This is a place i will be returning to just so i can try some of the other menu...

This was our very first time here, and let me tell you… we were completely blown away!!! I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and they were everything I hoped for and more — buttery, creamy, and bursting with flavor. Every bite felt like a perfect blend of comfort and soul. My husband had the meatloaf with cabbage, yams, and cornbread, and I got to taste some too. We kept looking at each other with every bite, shaking our heads in disbelief at how good everything was. He especially couldn’t stop talking about the cabbage — he was absolutely blown away by it!

We enjoyed it so much that we came back on a Sunday, and that’s when we tried the OXTAILS. OH. MY. GOODNESS. They were PHENOMENAL — tender, juicy, and literally falling off the bone. It was the kind of meal that makes you close your eyes just to savor every bite.

The food tasted like it was made with love, care, and tradition, and it truly warmed our hearts. The staff only made the experience better — so friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They treated us like family, not just guests, and that made all the difference.

This spot has definitely earned a permanent place on our list of favorites. If you want soul food that makes you feel at home and leaves you planning your next visit before you even finish your plate, this is the place to be. We’ll definitely be back — again and...
