Food was absolutely amazing! I came all the way from D.C. and was waiting so long to try this. I visit San Antonio often and I had been looking for something that taste like my late grandmother's cooking and I found it. This is some serious down south, put your love into it. Put your soul into this food, grandmama put her foot in it (but not literally..lol) soul food. I've been in San Antonio a few times before looking for something like this before they opened and could not find it. This was it. I wish I would have came here the entire 2 weeks I was here but trust and believe, this city girl will be back again my next trip and I'll be hanging out here and bringing family and friends. I wish we had this up North, the lines would be out the door the way us D.C. folk appreciate authentic soul food. I appreciated the service as well. We were greeted and there were a lot of people there so maybe about a 20 minute wait, but it was awesome. Our server was Frank and he was awesome! Checked in on us every few moments. Gave awesome service. I was skeptical about The cornbread until I tried it and I instantly said "This taste like my grandmama cornbread. Omg." It was so good. The deviled eggs were so good. The black eyed peas were just the way I make them at home but better. The chicken was juicy and seasoned very well. Everything had flavor. It was like my taste buds went on a journey with each side I taste. The only complaint I have is how small the place is and not a lot of room and small tables. I noticed a lot of people had to remove the sides from the tables and place them on the seats next to them just to enjoy all the food they ordered. We also had to do the same when our food finally arrived. It's a great location, just needs bigger tables and room to be a bit more comfortable. With the way business is booming, this should be in the plan. Other than that, amazing food and amazing service. Thank you to the team there for providing an exceptional service. Will be back with more friends and family. ❤❤❤
Sorry for the somewhat eaten food photos. I couldn't help but dig in as soon as the food was deliver. Almost forgot to take a picture. Lol
06/01/2019 Came back again to have the experience, we had the same server as last time and as always, the service and the food were amazing. Now, this place is one of the best. Love the consistency. ❤❤
09/07/2019 Went back again. And food was still amazing and so...
Read moreMy husband and I tried Mr. C's this morning with the high hopes of finding a nearby restaurant that served yummy waffles. When we arrived, it was fairly busy. Even so, it didn't take long for us to be seated, and we received our first round of drinks fairly quickly. We were happy to wait a bit for the food, as we had high expectations, based on other reviews.
My order was from the breakfast menu: waffles, eggs, sausage, grits, and a biscuit. When the order finally arrived, the grits and the biscuit were missing. One of the servers went to pick them up, and upon returning, informed me that the biscuit was being made, as it had been missed in the original order. He returned with the biscuit shortly after that in a to-go container, which was a bit confusing. If it needed to be made, how did he return almost immediately after telling us that with a biscuit?
Now for the food... It was the most disgusting and disappointing plate of food I have been served at a restaurant in a very long time. The eggs were not fully cooked and tasteless. The sausage patties were hard and cracked, as they had zero moisture. The grits actually had a clump of uncooked grains still in them. The clump wasn't even mixed into it; it was just a huge lump of grains sitting at the top. The "freshly-made" biscuit was rock hard and completely unappetizing in its appearance.
The worst part was the waffles. I may have forgiven everything, if I had gotten delicious waffles. Instead, I received 2 of the soggiest waffles I have ever seen. To be fair, I tried a bite, and it was obvious that the batter had a decent flavor. However, there was no way to eat them, as the texture was off-putting- complete mush.
My husband's order was for the Monte Cristo. He loved his sandwich, and he was quite pleased with the flavors and delivery.
I can understand that restaurants get busy, and perhaps they are suffering from short-handed staff, as many are in the wake of COVID. Still, I would have patiently waited for edible food. Based on our completely different dining experiences during our meal, we think that my order must have been made earlier than his, as it lacked any sort of freshly cooked feel. However, I am not sure if that fully explains the disgusting spread that they placed in front of me today. I left incredibly disappointed and hungry.
Overall, this restaurant is definitely...
Read moreI usually don’t write negative reviews, as I prefer to highlight what’s working and share positive experiences. However, my visit to Mr. C’s on Sunday, 5/26, at around 12:47 p.m., left me with enough concern that I feel compelled to share.
I understand that Sunday lunch is a peak time, and I’m empathetic when a restaurant is short-staffed. That said, what I witnessed during my visit was not simply a staffing issue—it was a breakdown in basic service and customer care.
After waiting about 35 minutes for a table (which I expected), several tables opened up as customers left. Instead of seating the waiting guests, the staff focused on cleaning the bar area—which wasn’t even in use—while multiple tables remained empty. Even once those tables were cleaned, no one was seated. It took another 30 minutes before any seating occurred, despite several available tables and more than 10 guests still in line. Eventually, the staff told us we could "sit wherever," nearly an hour after we first arrived.
Once seated, service continued to be inconsistent. Despite being next in line, we were overlooked as another group’s order was taken first. When our server arrived, she seemed irritated when we tried to place our order with our drink request to save time. We tried to be understanding, acknowledging the staff shortage, but her tone grew increasingly defensive.
When we asked about a substitute for the complimentary cornbread (which was unavailable), the server seemed confused and unhelpful. Eventually, we asked for Texas toast—even if it wasn’t complimentary—just to have some bread with the meal.
The final issue was when our food arrived: one piece of chicken fell onto the table as the server handed over the basket. She started to take the entire basket back, but we asked her to just replace the dropped piece since we were hungry. She reluctantly agreed, but then told us we were being “extremely rude.” At that point, the experience had gone from frustrating to disappointing.
We stayed and ate, but the meal was overshadowed by poor service, disorganization, and a lack of hospitality. I truly hope this was just an off day, but for a restaurant that clearly has potential, better training, communication, and customer service are urgently needed—especially when...
