Perfect food. It doesn't appear special. BUT don't let appearance fool you. The atmosphere is great, the food is real. The salsa has real heat, not spicy, it just makes you sweat which is what I think a lot of places are forgetting. From my experience, these are the largest tacos (not burritos, the tortilla size for the tacos specifically). They don't skimp out, they put the perct balance of all the flavors you'd expect from what we ordered.
The potatoes for my breakfast taco were perfect, something again places struggle with. I had ordered two bacon, egg, potato, and cheese breakfast tacos. Everything cooked perfect. I wanted to highlight the potatoes cause again I have yet to have had somewhere in San Antonio get potatoes right.
My wife ordered a baleada taco. She explained that everything was perfect. Real, tender steak bites. Everything in it was incredibly flavorful.
Misc items: Took care of my kiddo great with some scrambled eggs. He enjoyed them. Chips and queso along with the incredible perfect salsa were amazing. Very flavorful. And again, real not spicy but packed with heat salsa.
Come prepared with a translation app, I needed one and that is perfectly acceptable because of the type of restaurant it is. Very patient staff, tried their best with English which was incredible. Very patient with us and our limited spanish.
I don't write reviews often unless I find gems or if I am irate with a place. This is a gem. As I write this I'm holding back a tiny bit of tears of joy. So good. Been trying to find a place in San Antonio for a while. If you are craving this type of food, please come here. So happy from this experience.
I'll update as we expand into their menu further. See below.
Update #1: Guisada and eggs... so very good. Used to thick gravy, but they have a different spin, equally if not better than carne guisada I've had elsewhere. Eggs were great too. Wife had the Migas. Very rich in flavor. I had some, again so very good. Queso on par again. Salsa, again, it brings that perfect heat. So good. Tortillas great, come out nice and toasted warm. Kiddo had toast and eggs, I know toast shouldn't be crazy to brag about but again, they are perfect at what the do, the toast was so perfectly toasted. I don't know why I am so fascinated about this but I feel like toast is either under or over toasted. Their attention to detail on even the simple things is so great. Had an Arnold Palmer again. They do the actual layering of the tea on top of the lemonade. Attention to detail is again perfect!
Update #2 (April 19th 2024) Been a while since I've updated, but I've been here several times. For this style of food, I have not found any competition....
Read moreNot from this side of town, but managed to sneak my lovely lady out of work for lunch. She works down the street and we googled to find a lunch spot nearby that wasn't fast food. This is definitely a hole in the wall atmosphere with the same hospitality and awesome food you wouldn't ever come across in a typical Mexican restaurant or fast food chain style like a Las palapas. We went to eat and were the only two people there about 1pm on a Friday. We were greeted by Christian with a smile, some broken English, and a fairly sized array of food on the menu. He was quick to let us know the tortillas are homemade daily, and let us know about the specials they had. The lemonade was refreshing. Nice and cold after working outside all morning. Not tart, but slightly sweet. We ordered some chicken supreme nachos that had a good portion for being an appetizer. It definitely could have been a full meal. The carnitas and al pastor plates were good in size also with lots of flavor. My gf is very picky when it comes to refried beans, but she definitely approved of these. The tortillas were THICK, fresh, and had great flavor. We both got flour, but I will have to try the corn next time. I've been around every side of town and taco truck around, but this is definitely a hidden gem, especially being on the east side of town where Mexican food is not as common to find. I truly hope we caught them on a slow day due to all the construction at the highway a block away. I definitely would hate for them to close being a small business. I will definitely be back anytime im on this side of town. Christian was very polite, respectful, and gave us plenty of time to read through the big menu and answered all questions we had. Again, the language barrier doesn't make it easier on him in anyway to communicate with us, but he did phenomenal, was respectful, very friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure...
Read moreI was trying to find a reason to give this spot 4 stars but I couldn't find one. I'm the type that doesn't like to give out 5 stars like they're participation trophies for little league soccer. This place truly deserves 5 stars.
As you walk in you immediately notice that everything is well lit and kept clean and tidy. That's always a good sign.
The gentleman that takes care of you is courteous and welcoming. He promptly greets you with a "bienvenido brother". Very nice man. He was quick to give me recommendations on the perfect plate for me. I went with the Sultana del Sur plate. Great choice.
My food was excellent. Nothing but praise for the cooks.
The tortillas were made on the spot. They weren't reheated like at other places. The corn tortillas were perfect, not too thick not too thin. The flour tortillas were huge. Can't go wrong with either of those.
They have the BEST PUPUSAS IN SAN ANTONIO. Hands down.
Pro tip: ask for your pupusas extra toasted. When they're crispy the cheese tastes better.
My only gripe is that their salsa doesn't have enough heat to it.
Over all you should give this place a try. It will...
