I’ve been living here for a 12 years now. Came from Minnesota. And I remember when my mother in-law showed us the taco she bought at this place. Well today I took my family to eat there. and I was shocked how ghetto it looks. This restaurant it would not even open in Minnesota. It has so many variations. However this is Texas cockroach, infested restaurants, I have seen my share since I have dinned in. I didn’t see any in the restaurants, however I wouldn’t say they don’t have any the way the atmosphere looks like run down tables and chairs. The vents full of dust and grim. In the photo you can see how that door it has not changed since I came here 12 yrs ago. The owners has a Mexican theme going on with the bright colors. Rolando’s restaurant chain since they have been in service, they do nothing to update any of their restaurants. I felt, I was in the rundown side of Mexico and eat at your own risk. If you need to pee hold it. It was a scene from the 80’s movie nightmare on Elms street. Where it looks like the boiler room basement where Freddy Krueger doesn’t care to update the restroom 🤣. It’s that disgusting. If you’re a germ 🦠 freak. Stop looking around. It only gets worse. 😂😂. Chairs and tables stuffed with napkins to keep them leveled . Everything about this restaurant is screams. Stop being cheap and update already. 12 yrs and it still looks the same. Nothing has changed . You’re racking in the money. I’ve seen some restaurants in Mexico that are so beautiful and take pride in their restaurants. This one just cares to bring you in and order from their menu . Of which this is where my review is going. Their menu dose not show you the prices so you don’t know what your paying. And after I paid $65 plus tip. I came back and questioning a price that I didn’t order. And the young girl with an attitude as soon as I went in says I got this. So she starts to explain with her boopboop. And never answer what I went in for. So I told her why are your prices hiding . She says it’s your job to get up and go look at the menu. I told excuse me. That’s where you’re wrong. I shud not do your job! How will I know if you’re jacking up the price if I have to do your waitress job! then why leave a tip or why add a gratuity tip if I’m doing your job my daughter-in-law did not like the way she was explaining to me like if I was a child I’m nobody’s child. I told her as a business person you update your menus her words it’s to expensive, you do your way we do our way. And some big mouth had her two cents in the conversation . Telling me don’t have to come here!!! so she had her word, but I ended with a smarter word, since their to cheap to make a new menu that look exactly the same 12 yrs ago to this date . I told her go to a scanning machine and print out your menu and then put your prices where you have it blacked out! It’s that simple that’s how fast you can do it. I told her we live in a digital world that does things fast now we don’t have to write menus technology can do it for you. So if you’re looking for a place to go and dine in. This is not the place. If they tell you get up and go look at the menu. If you think it’s my job to do yours. I’m the one dinning in. This place it is so run down the super tacos are hyped. The food look like slop, so I hope they see this review if they care about their business. This restaurants is nasty. Mexico. Restaurants are better looking than this ghetto. Worse...
Read more"I think the food here is really good." The last words I heard from the little girl behind the register before I walked out and I couldn't help shaking an echo of that one YouTube video where white college kids declare Torchy's the best tacos in Texas.
It has been years since I have been to Rolando's. I live down the street but just hadn't taken the time to go back. I recently went to the Hildebrand location for a lunch date and was severely disappointed in the food quality. I mentioned it to a coworker who told me that Rolando's had been bought out and was under new ownership and that the food is now no good but wasn't sure about the south side location. Today i decided to try it myself. I asked some questions to the cashier to get a timeline of this ownership change and it honestly didn't sound correct. She said her father owned it and seeing a white kid at the register honestly is a true symbol of what has become of this South Side tradition. Let me outline my experience:
I arrived thirty minutes after I called my order and it wasn't ready. Apparently I didn't grasp what the cashier told me over the phone but they will not make a phone order until you pay for it. Wow. So there was no point in me even calling in the first place. This was an inconvenience as I was on a time crunch.
I ordered a bean and cheese with bacon and an asada. While the size of the super tacos was undeniably impressive, that's where it ends. The food is so mediocre. Maybe it was cause I got there 30 minutes before closing but the beans left much to desire. The beans at Mama Margie's are much better. The bacon was stringy and had a lot of fat- reminded me of the 2 dollar bacon pack my mom would buy when I was a kid 🙄 The asada was dry and so bland you pretty much have to add salsa to enjoy it.
Maybe for someone who has never been, the novelty of the super tacos may be worth the visit but I would recommend going when they are half off because that's the only way they are worth it. If you want a fat taco that's also good, I would recommend Angie's. For asada, Blue Moon.
I honestly would rate the food closer to 2 or 3 stars but take this 1 star rating as a statement that the white people who have desecrated Rolando's do not have my support. The food is so mediocre, I wouldn't even recommend it to my white friends. Please take this bland food out of Texas and take In and Out...
