I love a dressed up, expensive meal every now and then, but my heart and soul lies with the Taquitos West Aves of the world. I know I romanticize a lot, but I really mean this one.
It is an authentic, no-frills Mexican experience. You walk into a space that looks like it's a converted mechanics shop, get in line, and pick the type of $2 tacos you want. Your options range from Chorizo, Tripes, Steak, Tongue, Delicacy Head Cuts, Brisket, or Al Pastor.
I got to the front SO Much faster than I was anticipating as the line moved quick, and was completely unprepared to order. I ended up spraying and praying, ordering 8 tacos, trying everything but the Tripe cuz me and Tripe have just never seen eye to eye.
The two Mexican dudes behind the counter worked SO quick, picking out 8 small tortillas, putting them on a plate with the correct meat on each, and topped each one with fresh onions, cucumbers, cilantro, radishes, and a lime.
I was confused at first, as you don't pay until AFTER you eat. It is a full honor system with how many tacos you ate. It's a Mexican thing, you wouldn't get it...
We took our tacos over to one of the steel tables, put some red salsa on 4 and green salsa on 4 (got to A/B Test the salsas), and went to WORK. These tacos were exactly what you would expect at a place like this. Just mf delicious. Juicy and Fresh. Every bite I was just thanking the Blessed Mother for allowing me to eat food like this.
We were fresh off a good workout, so those first 8 tacos didn't stand a chance. I went back and got 6 more, doubling up on brisket, al pastor, and Delicacy Head (hehe). My favorite ended up being the Delicacy Head. Some good Delicacy Head is a lost art in today's society but nobody wants to talk about that...
When we got to the front of the line to pay, I said I had 15 tacos instead of 14. I don't know why, but I just want places like this to continue to exist in the world. I'm sure some people get 10 and say they had 8 and feel good about themselves for saving some bread, but that is about the lamest thing you could ever do in my eyes. Idk.
Shoutout to my man Luis Cerrillo, the owner of this place. According to their website, he started this business in 2008 with the goal of bringing street-style mini tacos from Jalisco, Mexico to Texas. Mission Accomplished, Luis. Job Finished.

It's been on many youtube reviews, and some TV show. Unfortunately with that fame comes crowds and every time we've been over the last several years it's been too busy for us to stop. There's time with lines literally down the road. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights??? forgetaboutit..This place gets crazy busy. So we finally went during the middle of the week at 11AM. Even at this time, there was a decent line to wait in..So we wait, you walk up and tell the cook (usually in spanish) what you want and they pretty much slap it all together instantly while you watch; VERY quick. I got the Bistek, Al Pastor, and Tripas. My wife got the Al Pastor and Bistek. You then take your food and sit down at a stainless table with your drink, eat and pay after..VERY much an honor system. The prices are VERY good. The atmosphere is almost the same you'd find in Mexico, very nice. The staff was quick and very nice. If we're honest, the area is a little suspect but during the day, you're probably ok. The big question, the food. The street tacos are definitely top shelf. The Al Pastor is being cooked on a rotating spit right in front of you just like you'd find in Mexico. The flavor of the Bistek (beef) was very good; I'd rate it a solid 8.5/10, the Al Pastor (pork) I'd rate a solid 9/10 and the tripas (stomach and intestines') had a good flavor. The green salsa they bring to your table was way better than the red. The red was hotter but the green had better flavor. Overall, I'd rate this taqueria for sure in the top 10 in Texas. In San Antonio, I think we prefer Eric's tacos a bit more but Eric's ties for the top spot in Texas overall. The other top spot most folks have never heard of is in Hico, Texas called Don Julio's. As far as Taquitos West Ave...I highly recommend this place if you like top notch authentic Mexican Street Tacos at outstanding prices. I'd definitely go...
Read moreLimited menu. On the day we went there they did not have the Al pastor that my friend wanted... I hear its great but only offered Thursday thru Sunday... But overall good.
It's mini tacos on corn tortillas... buy as many as you want for your plate ( FYI- 6 fit fine) they can also add grilled onions and jalapeno if you like... No ice tea, bottled drinks including water... Parking is way better than it used to be... When you walk in someone comes up and ask you what you want to drink then you stand in line to order your food... and while you're standing in line they take your drinks to a table and then tell you where they put your drinks.
After you order your food you go sit down and eat and then after you eat you go to pay... It's nice that they added a larger inside dining, I can remember standing in a hot line.... tables are kind of odd and they have little metal stools that are a little bit short to sit on and dont move... we were six of us and they only had 1 six top so we had to sit at two four tops, so kind of separated but still.
The music is really loud. What? (Yelling) I said they music is way loud! No really loud. Like live bad loud. If you dont like Mexican music wear your own jams... One of my friends said she didn't know whether she should have lunch or dance lol... But be ready for that... we could hardly talk... we did not talk to the other table because there was just too much bass in the load music and too much distance. Is it worth it? Yes please.
One friend expected it to be cheaper but he probably remembers when a loaf of bread was 50 cents... Full disclosure I might too.. Dont let the line scare you away, they have this...
