El Jefe Cafe — Restaurant in San Clemente

Never had a problem and we were quite happy with the quality and the quantity of the food until today!

The Waitresses seemed confused and dazed on the serving portions of the Fish and Chips! I asked them to explain the portions differences between the Small and the Large Plate.

They explained that the Large Plate consisted of six pieces, while the Small only consisted of four. The price differences were $6 dollars vs. $11 Dollars.

However, when the food came after ordering the Large plate, there was only four pieces of fish! un-like before, six. Also, the size of the pieces were a lot smaller than before and the French Fry's were noticeably fewer than before, just a hand full. Compared to the last time, we could hardly finish the fry's between the two of us. The size of each piece of Fish was almost double the size and the French Frys were twice as much! We also noticed that the plate which the food came on was smaller than the last time that we were there!

This the protions were half the size than before. When I asked this time, I got a different story. I was told that the smaller plate consisted of two pieces for $6 dollars and the larger plate consisted of four pieces for $11 dollars.

I don't know what's going on with this place, but something is seriously wrong! We were not satisfied with the portions or the examination of why the food was not the same as before. The Waitresses were confused and dumbfounded in explaining the differences in the portions and the size of the portions!

We have been going to this place for about 2 years and have been completely satisfied with the food and the dinning until today! We Will not be returning! There is no excuse for the waitresses not to be able to explain why the complete change of one of their most popular dishes that they serve!

Their online menu shows old prices, ie $8.99 for 4 pcs of fish and chips charged $13.99 which is printed on their menu, but baited by online... could count the chips on one hand portions were small. Katchup and water are free. When asked to see the manager to let them know their online menu needed updating I was told, no manager and owner knows and wants online that way. Fish and Chips were good. Waitress friendly. FEEL RIPPED OFF and wonder if locals pay same prices? Trust lost. Btw 4% added for debit card or credit card use... refused to give me an itemized receipt, much more than 4% was added.... AGAIN I FEEL RIPPED OFF. Wish the manager or at least the guy she went to when I asked to see the manager (whoever he was) would have talked to me. The fish and chips were good.... have gone there for years... too bad they need to mislead customers.

A YEAR TO RESPOND. Sorry but Im trusting the waitress who said the owner knows of the deception and WANTS it that way. BTW ADDING MORE THAN 4% AND REFUSING TO CHANGE IT TO BE CORRECT IS JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE BUSINESS DESIGNED TO RIP OFF THE CUSTOMER.

I don't leave reviews ever. I had to for this place. It looked like your normal Southern California Mexican restaurant that we've all grown accustomed to. The place was clean and I didn't get sick. That is a plus. The waitress didn't speak or understand English. However, the food was absolutely disgusting. It took two days solid to get the taste of their chips and salsa to go away. If you've ever eaten in Mexico, you know there is a vast difference between the Mexican food here in California and Mexico. And that's what this food was. It's food that people in Mexico are accustomed to. I asked if the beef was carne asada, and she said yes. The beef was all that precooked Brazilian shredded beef junk. Salsa was sweet and made with the canned stewed tomatoes and funky seasonings. The chips were not fresh made tortilla chips. They were bagged chips from Mexico, tasted nasty and were orange in color. The cheese in the quesadilla was that processed stuff. The iced tea was nasty and the soda tasted strange and was flat. If you're looking for that trademark delicious SoCal Mexican food, this place is not it. I will never eat...
