Malulu Sushi — Restaurant in San Clemente

While not in any rush, we showed for our Google assisted reservation on time and were seated promptly. After that, the service came to a crawl. It took 90 minutes to complete our dining experience at a very small sushi place. The food came out at all different times for our party of just four and even when the place was only a quarter full it took 15-20 minutes to get additional dishes ordered. The only reason we can surmise is it is due to making a reservation while everyone else seemed to be walk-ins. The walk-ins who showed 10-20 minutes after we were seated were out of there 30 minutes before we were. Such a bummer because we were hoping this would become our new sushi spot. The head chef was more interested in talking up diners at the counter than making sure all guests were having a good experience. Food was good but the service might keep us...

When we searched for the best sushi place in San Clemente, Malulu Sushi came up first on the list.

Good things come in small packages, right? Well, this is a small place, but it doesn't matter because the food & service are excellent.

To me, service is very important!!! At Malulu, the Japanese hospitality is on full display. Then, the food came, and we realized that we had found our favorite sushi place in SC.

Everything we ordered was tasty. And to our surprise, the female sushi chef made the best spicy yellow tail handroll. It reminded us of a sushi roll that we could only get at a sushi restaurant in Laguna Niguel (sadly, the chef moved to Japan).

I have traveled extensively in Japan and wifey and I are both very picky when it comes to Sushi so we waited a few weeks after the reopening to let the new owner get acclimated. After hearing good things we finally had our first meal with young Chef Kazuma and were more than pleased. As always, we order Omakase and it was simply Excellent! Everything beautifully plated and super tasty. Nobu was our go to sushi chef for his many years in San Clemente and tho' we will miss he and Ami very much we are thankful he has chosen a worthy successor and we don't have to search for another Itamae.
