OK I'm always looking for new sushi places to try, and believe me I've tried a lot in my travels. My friend and I came across Boto Sushi and decided to have lunch. The interior vibe is very nice, unique touch with the tile wall to write the menu rather than a chalk board LOL. Their claim to fame is their fish/seafood is the highest quality from Japan. Quite frankly, I found all my favorites that I would normally eat at a Japanese restaurant were crazy expensive. For example, the regular Uni $18 a piece, not to mention the Japanese Uni $30 a piece. Thanks but no thanks. We we also found the service to be spotty and could barely hear the sushi chef. We ordered the basics. It was all good. I see they have a few very special items like the Japanese river crab, Firefly squid. If that's your thing this is the place for you. Just be prepared to pay the prices. Atmosphere: very nice, sleek, natural wood feel. Food: good but $$$$. Service: OK

Boto Sushi is definitely one of the best high-end sushi places in San Diego. Chef Gary always has many rare specialty and seasonal fish flown in from Japan that are absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. He has a very unique background for sushi chefs and this translates into amazing and interesting flavor combinations that you can't find at any other sushi restaurant in San Diego. He also makes all of his sauces in house and even dishes that no one else makes on their own like monkfish liver appetizer, which is the best you'll find in San Diego. Highly recommend you sit with Chef Gary and get the omakase. A little tip for you - the Rosy sea perch is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The staff are all incredibly nice. This is definitely a treat-youself, awesome date night place - your neighborhood sushi joint simply cannot compare!

Boto Sushi delivers on flavor and service—everything we ordered was fresh, well-executed, and beautifully presented. The staff there is amazing and the space has that modern zen vibe you want from a higher-end sushi spot. That said, I went with the Prestige Omakase and left wishing it had a bit more… well, fish. For the price, I expected the experience to be a touch more generous, especially when spots like Kinme and Maru offer comparable (or better) omakase portions at similar price points. Still, Boto is a solid sushi destination in Del Mar—worth a visit.

Some real pros and cons here. The good first: I had some really fun and exotic plates here that I haven't tried anywhere else. The selection of unique seafood was really fun and the way it was prepared was pretty great! But the bad...the service was pretty awful. At numerous times throughout our omakase meal we had plates literally stackeded up at the bar in front of us. Food came a little too quick in succession, and we more than once had more than one dish in front of us ready to eat. The worst...I am a huge sushi fan and love a good omakase, and more importantly I'm willing to pay for it! Our party of 3 elected to all partake in the omakase which is advertised between $150-180 per person. Somehow, with only 3 total beers ordered for our table, our bill came out to over $840, a staggering $280 per person. I'm not sure how there was such a MASSIVE jump in pricing, but if that is going to happen, you should let your customers know that the pricing will be higher. Overall, for some this might be worth a visit to try some of the exotic selections they have available. But beware of what you are ordering, and expect subpar service when compared to most of the other omakase...

If you are looking for a high-end authentic Japanese sushi/sashimi experience, look no further. Our family has been dining here for over 5 years, and we've enjoyed every single visit.

Gary's sushi and sashimi is not only fresh, delicious, but also beautifully presented. Gary boasts unparalleled cutting skills allowing the taste of the fish to be accentuated and enjoyed.

The ambience is bright and relaxing, while the service is also superb. My husband had his birthday Omakase here two years in a row, and we also brought my father-in-law here for Father's Day celebration.

Everything on the menu is not to be missed, but the dishes we've ordered and enjoyed the most are: rainbow roll, hamachi lover roll, mango tango roll, XOXO roll, Toro tartare with caviar, Japanese Mackerel, Heart of Palm Salad, Vegetable cut roll, Kama yellowtail, agedashi tofu, clam miso soup, udon soup, Omakase, and black sesame panna cotta for...
