Great jerk chicken! Update: To Go Order of Sweet African Jerk Chicken with Ugali (cornmeal) and Biringanya (eggplant). The amount of chicken was small and what I'd expect for a side portion, and was placed in one of the small sections of the container. In the other small section was the Ugali, which is flavorless on its own, but ok when mixed with the Biringanya sauce. The Biringanya occupied the large section of the container, but was mostly sauce. It was good that they wrapped the container in plastic wrap, since the sauces of the chicken and Biringanya went everywhere in the container and surely would have leaked into the bag. The flavors of the chicken and Biringanya were very good, however the portions were less than what I'd expect for a $15.95 entree. Update: The dine in meals are still served in To Go plastic boxes. Ordered the sweet jerk chicken, with coconut rice and eggplant; and the beef stew, with saffron rice and collard greens. Overall the portions are smaller than they were pre-covid. The jerk chicken was tasty, but was 1/3 the normal size with just four small chunks and the remainder were small fragments and resided in one of the small compartments of its box. The beef stew was tasty, but was about 3/4 the normal size and resided in the large compartment of its box. The beef was tough with lots of gristle. If meat of that quality is to be used then it should be pressure cooked to make it tender. Given that chicken is cheaper to source than beef, I was surprised that it was the least protein in the two entrees. Since the taste of everything was still good, we will wait for normal plating to resume and come back to see if the normal portions also resume. Update: Food is still served in the plastic To Go containers. Ordered the Sweet Jerk Chicken and the Spicy Jerk Chicken, the Biringanya (eggplant), Plantains, and Coconut rice. Everything was very tasty. The amount of proteins is still very minimal. Be careful, the Spicy Jerk Chicken is over the top hot. So don't order it unless you can take the heat. Update: Ordered the Chicken Curry, Saffron Rice and Collard Greens. All were very tasty. Update: Got the Tilapia with Saffron Rice and Collard Greens. Very tasty. Our new favorite. Got Sweet Jerk Chicken. It was mostly sauce with tiny chicken fragments. Tasty, but hardly any meat. Update: Got Sweet Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken with Saffron Rice, Collard Greens, and Nyoyo. Everything was delicious. The jerk chicken portion was small again with mostly small chicken fragments. Update: Got Sweet Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken with Saffron Rice, Collard Greens, Plantains, and Beans & Corn. Everything was delicious. Update: Got the Sweet Jerk Chicken dinner plate with plantains and saffron rice, and the Fried Fish dinner plate with collard greens and saffron rice. Both were delicious! We also were given free donuts for dessert. They were made fresh and were like excellent beignets. Update: Got the Beef Stew and Chicken Curry entrees. Both were very good! Update: Got the Chicken Curry and Tilapia entrees. Both were very good! Update: Got two large lunch specials of Chicken Curry and Sweet Jerk Chicken, with collard greens, plantains, beans and corn, pulau rice and saffron rice. Everything was excellent! Update: Got two large lunch specials of Chicken Curry and Sweet Jerk Chicken and Spicy Jerk Chicken, with collard greens, plantains, beans and corn, pulau rice and saffron rice. Everything...
Read moreFlavors of East Africa stays true its name. Never been to Africa, but this is the closest I have been. Since we already had enough appetite as soon as we entered, we did not order any appetizer. Let me start with Staff, very friendly staff, especially Solomon, the ever smiling happy waiter. We even watched soccer game together. Interior is simple and felt very authentic African. We ordered, Injera Bowl, Medium Combi, Goat Curry, Chapati, Injera rolls and dal curry. In different ordered we covered lot of vegetarian and non-vegetarian combinations. The medium combo comes with one Rice, One Chicken Choice, Two Veggie Choice, remember, you can choose two rice half and half too. Our favorites in order: Mbuzi / Goat Curry: Amazing, it as good as Indian Goat curry, same species, and masalas. Goat cooked with African spices and curry sauce, served with rice choice and veggie choice, we asked for extra spicy. Our combo came with SPICY AFRICAN JERK CHICKEN, it was great, but the sweet AFRICAN JERK CHICKEN was not that great, too sweet for chicken. Injera Bowl, came with Three Veggie Choices Served on top of Ethiopian Injera Bread. We asked for Collard Greens it came mixed with Cabbage, so fresh and crispy cabbage, perfectly cooked, Fried Eggplant in a Tomato Based Sauce and Fried plantains, its perfect choice for Appetizer, Dessert or even main entre. And we also tried SIDE OF DENGU, its like dal curry, comfort food. Rice Choices: Coconut rice, Yellow (saffron) rice and Ugali, Ugali is made of steamed corn. Coconut rice was good and we chose for the most combination. The best combinations of all is Chapati and Goat curry, I will go again to try the same. Next time, we want to try Oxtail, full tilapia, and...
Read moreI want to start by saying that Its not my intention to tarnish or discredit any business, especially one that is close to my heart as an immigrant from Kenya. My family relocated to San Diego recently and we were ecstatic to find a restaurant that serves food from home, needless to say -especially with the pandemic- we have frequented this restaurant sometimes even multiple times a week, its no secret that they are a bit pricey, but we felt it was well worth it to us however, I believe that the true value of any business relationship is gauged when something goes wrong and the business has to make things right, this brings us to my contention. We placed an order tonight and we were excited to have our usual meal but decided to buy some extra chapati’s for breakfast tomorrow. When we picked up our order, to my surprise and dismay the chapatis were frozen stiff in the middle but the edges were slightly warm, call me naive but I was shocked that they had given us frozen chapatis, I sent my husband back in the restaurant to find out if they made a mistake, my sweet husband comes back chapati’s in tow and let me know that they told him that the chapati’s are made elsewhere hence why they are kept frozen, I’ll be honest and say that its not unheard of for restaurants to freeze some of their food items however to serve food frozen if not advertised as such in my opinion is unprofessional, in the attempt to communicate this fact with the lady at the restaurant she defensively shut the conversation down by stating she will give us the money back and take back the chapatis, so we handed them back the chapati’s ,got our money back and left, Our business might be minuscule however they have without a...
