Ike's Love & Sandwiches — Restaurant in San Diego

Was really excited to visit Ike’s after not having eaten there since college a few years ago. When we showed up on Saturday evening (yesterday) around 7 and they loudly announced they had a $200 order and it would be at least a 30 min wait. We determined we were willing to wait and went to go order. However, we ended up standing at the counter for 5+ mins waiting for someone to take our order while the 3 staff (2 males & a female) were right there next to us just totally ignoring the fact that we still wanted to get our order in- it was like getting ghosted in person. During this time other people would walk in line and they would only break their “ghosting” to shout “we have a $200 order it’s gonna be at least 30 mins” while proceeding to STILL not take our order or at least say that they won’t be taking orders. The bearded guy in the chiefs shirt clearly wanted to create an uninviting situation to make people leave instead, which they did when they saw they wouldn’t even take our order at the front of the line. So rude. So, we decided to sit down until they were ready to take our order. About 15 mins later someone walks in and they decide to take their order. It really rubbed us the wrong way that 1. They wouldn’t even acknowledge they weren’t going to take orders, and 2. They knew we were waiting to order and then took someone else’s order knowing we were waiting. Only then did we get in line to take our order. Sandwiches were good but we spent an hour there, where more than half the time was spent with treatment like they wanted us to go away. Oh yeah, we never even saw the person come in for their $200 order that needed to be ready in 30 mins during the hour we were there. Overall, I was disappointed they so heavily prioritized their online order over the people coming in. I’d be more understanding if they had been polite about the situation and taken our order so we could at least get our order “in line” for when they could get started on it. So I absolutely love Ike’s and eat it often. I was so excited when this location opened up closer to me so that I could finally get it delivered since I live in range. However, for the past month this location has been marked “closed” on DoorDash and all other delivery platforms, which is so unfortunate because I am not always able to pick it up. I suspect they are loosing out on many sales because of this.

Regarding the other reviews about poor customer service.. I did notice that the first few months, especially this one girl was so abrasive when I ordered on the phone. Sounded like she was mad at me and it was a nuisance to be doing her job.

Lately though it has been improving and seems like they’ve hired some talented sandwich makers with positive attitudes.

I want to give the workers benefit of the doubt since they may not have received sufficient training from management. The opening was pushed backed from its original date by 3 months so maybe they had trouble with staffing.

I love Ike’s - but this location is horrible!! I was stoked to see that an Ike’s opened closer to north county San Diego! I went down there today to get a sandwich and try my long-time favorite- The Steve Jobs. Unfortunately it was the worst Steve Jobs I’ve ever had.

To begin - the bread was different than the usual Dutch Crunch. It was much thicker, spongy/chewier - and made up most of the sandwich. Definitely not the way their DC typically is. The toppings were lacking – there were just two small pieces of eggplant on the whole thing and paired with mountains of lettuce... The worst part was that unfortunately both pieces of eggplant were VERY undercooked and chewy AF which is the worst way to eat eggplant.

Sandwich was a 1 out 10 when it’s usually a 10/10 from other locations. I hope this is just a learning curve for being a new location, but I will only be visiting SD and OC locations moving forward.
