When I came up to the door, I was not greeted by anyone or even acknowledged for about 5 minutes. There was a sign that said, "please wait to be seated". So I waited...and waited...Finally a frazzled looking waiter said "I'll be with you in a second" and then disappeared again for another two minutes.
Finally a lady, who might have been the owner came over and seated me in the bar. This whole time there were two sushi chefs behind the bar completely ignoring me even though I was maybe 5 feet away from them.
After being seated, no one spoke to me for about 5-10 minutes. No drink order, no what can I get started for you, nothing. Finally one of the sushi chefs looked at me and said rudely, "are you ready to order something?" I ordered a rainbow roll, California roll, and a side order of Gyoza. I ordered it all since I didn't know how long it would take to do it one at a time based on the experience so far.
Still no drink at this point. After he took my order the lady that sat me down came back and asked if I wanted something to drink, but her English was so poor she barely understood that I asked for root beer. I had to point at the menu where it was listed.
After being there for probably 30 mins (since walking in the door) I finally revived my root beer and my first roll.
The California roll appeared to be almost room temp. I was a little worried about it, but it tasted fine. It would have tasted much can better if it had been colder though. The rainbow roll was fine (not great) but, no complaints. The Gyoza was super salty, like they seasoned it after the fact with salt.
If I wanted any more rolls I was out of luck. Apparently the chef nearest to me went on break, but no one told me and no one took over for him. So I didn't get any more rolls.
When I wanted a refill, the waitress was standing right next to me at the sushi bar chatting with the other sushi chef about things not related to work and even after staring at her with my glass in hand, she couldn't be bothered to get me my refill. When she was done talking to him, she finally got it, but took 5 minutes to come back with it. What she didn't seem to notice is that I could see her in the kitchen standing there with my refill in her hand, and she was talking to the chef who was on break!!!
Since leaving, I am frustrated, out $25 (I didn't tip them and even left a note at the bottom of my receipt stating no tip for poor service) and have a bit of a stomach ache. Needless to say, I WILL NOT EVER be returning to this...
Read moreI have never been so disappointed in my life about a restaurant I really like. After being a customer for 7 years they have lost one until I feel they care about their dine in customers and their staff. We made a 6pm reservation. We were seated and had our order taken at 6:20pm. They server told us 30 to 40 min because they were busy. I was okay with that. The problem is that by busy they meant they were filling all the togo orders while putting all dine in orders to the bottom of the pile. We waited patiently for 50 minutes without having seen our server since she dropped off our appetizer. At 7:10 we asked someone to look into when our food would come. They never returned. At 7:30 we spoke to the manager and she said the stopped taking togo orders but still no idea when our order would come out. At this point we hadnt seen the person who took our order for 1 hour. To not even come by and explain what was going on was beyond doing a bad job as a server. I even spoke to the manager and asked if anything would be comped. In the mean time people by us who ordered finally got up and left after waiting 90 minutes and said they wouldnt be back after having been coming for 5 years. When we got our bill nothing was comped. As a result my only option was to give $0 tip. I was very up front to both the manager and the server for what I was doing and why. The manager then laughed at me. For this reason and the fact that dine in customers with reservations were put behind togo customers means it is unlikely we will be back. There are more than enough Sushi restaurants in Carmel Valley or within 15 min of Carmel Valley. While the food is excellent I simply cannot patronize an establishment that behaved the way they did tonight. While I understand restaurants are trying to recover from the pandemic this is no way to do it. Service is paramount in the restaurant industry and tonight was a major fail for Katana. Hopefully they find a way to improve how they handle busy nights otherwise I suspect they will lose...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars I would. This is the fifth time now we have placed a DoorDash order from Katana and each time they either send the wrong food item or send the wrong quantity of food. I’m sorry but the last time I checked if we order and pay for 4 hand rolls then we should receive 4 hand rolls and not 1. Yes, DoorDash was wonderful and always refunded us but shouldn’t katana be checking their orders? It is seriously so inconvenient. We genuinely like the sushi and quality of food they offer which is the only reason we kept on ordering but the customer service and even the basic understanding of me asking them to double check our order before our dasher picks up our food was apparently too much to ask for. Tonight as we placed the order for 4 salmon hand rolls and again ONLY RECEIVE 1, I call them to please DOUBLE CHECK THEIR OUTGOING ORDERS. But the manager insists I take the problem up with DoorDash as “it isn’t their responsibility to make sure we receive the right order.” I try and tell them that it is in fact their responsibility to fulfill the correct order as ordered and DoorDash has already fixed the problem on their end and what do I get in return? The manager saying we’re too busy for this and hanging up. JUST DOUBLE CHECK YOUR OUTGOING ORDERS. As someone who used to work in the industry, it’s really not that hard. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. Honestly pathetic of a business owner or even just a business to allow something so easy to ruin...
