Mokkoji Shabu Shabu has brought its unique dining experience to Mira Mesa, San Diego, following the success of its Orange County location. The restaurant features modern, minimalist décor with clean, white tables and pots that create an inviting and elegant atmosphere, perfect for enjoying their food.
The menu offers high-quality proteins like wagyu beef and seafood, but the prices are steep. Diners start by selecting their preferred broth, followed by their choice of meat, which comes with a vegetable plate and rice. The portions are carefully divided by weight and number of pieces, ensuring consistency. If you’re dining with someone, the special for two is a great way to sample different types of meat.
For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, the weekday lunch special is a good deal. It includes a plate of flat iron steak (10 pieces) and a vegetable platter with items such as bok choy, cabbage, cilantro, pumpkin, mushrooms, and udon. I opted for the sukiyaki broth, which added a pleasant sweetness to the beef, and I also chose the $8 surf & turf add-on with assorted seafood (two pieces each of salmon, shrimp, and scallops).
They provide a raw egg, sesame sauce, and ponzu sauce, with an optional ghost pepper sauce for those who enjoy intense heat. The combination of beef, vegetables, udon, and rice in the sukiyaki broth was delightful, and the staff was attentive and friendly.
Overall, while Mokkoji offers a well-organized dining experience with quality ingredients, I would suggest other all-you-can-eat (AYCE) shabu shabu restaurants for better value considering the...
Read moreI love Mokkoji even before they come to San Diego so when knowing San Diego will have their own Mokkoji, I am beyond excited. Mokkoji is a whole new delicious way of enjoying traditional Shabu Shabu. We’re not comparing this to the quality of an AYCE, a Shabu meal itself normally on a higher side of price. But it is the experience, uniqueness and quality of their foods that defined Mokkoji - where I want to keep going back whenever craving for Shabu. The one Shabu place that I walked out after dining and feel it’s worth every penny. Their specialty is their meat - you can taste quality in every bite. My favorite is Mokkoji cut & have it marinated. Their savory and unique soup bases. My favorite and that I would highly recommend to try is : Spicy Pork Broth ( available in non-spicy as well) and Fire Crab (yummmm). If you love spicy like me, make sure to add a hot drop into the house sauce. Oh, and their veggies is another real deal to mention, unlimited order on Bok Choy, Kale and Napa. Staffs in Mira Mesa location were friendly and welcoming although they’re new. Service is very attentive throughout our time there. We came during a busy dinner night and came back for lunch the next day, there had been some wait time on both occasions but I don’t mind at all because we used to drive 1.5-2hrs to Irvine for a great Shabu experience before. What should I complain about ? As a foodie who used to drive all the way to Irvine, OC, and LA for great foods & drinks all my youth. I can’t be more grateful for great things like this...
Read moreGot an early dinner here with a few coworkers. Two of us had never been, the other two had. I was a newbie, but had been wanting to try hotpot. The restaurant was empty when we got there and one of us was running late. When three of us were there, we went inside to get a table, explained that we were still waiting on one. This didn’t seem to be a problem and we were fine to wait to order. After sitting for about 15 minutes we decided to order (restaurant was still empty) a waitress came to our table and told us there was a 90 minute timer, regardless of when our friend arrived. We didn’t ask for clarification, which is on us, but we assume this had to do with the actual cooking time. Since Everytable has the heating pads for the broth. Eventually, the final member of our party arrived, ordered her food, and we were all having a nice time. By the time we were finishing our food, the restaurant was filling up, but there were still plenty of empty tables. We paid for our food, and were talking when the waitress from earlier came and told us, our timer was up. Apparently it began when we sat down, although there’s nothing on the menu to that effect. And despite there still being empty tables, we were obliged to leave. I would consider all of us considerate people, I’ve seen table malinger much more egregiously, and I’m sure we were being punished for showing up too early. That experience kind of ruined it for me. The food was OK. The concept of overpaying for meat that I have to cook myself is never really my thing, but it...
