Palmitos Mexican Eatery — Restaurant in San Diego

I've been a loyal customer of Palmitos for many years. Housed in an old Taco Bell in the heart of Clairemont I have witnessed all the improvements over the years. They've done an amazing job on improvements going for a nice clean, modern look. In addition they have HD TVs and video menus along with a really neat outdoor seating area. They keep it super clean as well. The staff is always friendly and efficient and the kitchen has your delicious meal ready before you can eat more than a couple of the complimentary chips. The salsa bar is well stocked and very traditional including radishes and marinated carrots. All the salsas are fresh and taste amazing!

The new atmosphere is great but what about the food? First of all the menu is gigantic, containing the standard taco shop offerings as well as traditional Mexican dishes such as whole fish and homemade soups.

All that aside my favorite thing is that carne asada. I consider myself an expert and I genuinely believe that this is hands down the BEST carne asada I've ever had. They use a good quality of meat and cook it to perfection. It's never tough or overcooked and the seasoning is spectacular! If you are a carne asada fiend like me you must hit...

Good value for taco Tuesday $2 tacos and $2.50 dos equis. TT Tacos are street taco style. The tortillas were really good along with the salsa. I had a shrimp, fish, and barbacoa. The fish and the shrimp were pretty good. Crunchy good flavor but also slightly heavy on the batter or at least fish was. They are only $2 though so gotta be realistic with expectations. The barbacoa I would probably not order again. It wasn't bad just the texture was kinda soft, probably from being on the steam table for a while. It was ok though and definitely not "bad". Limes and radishes were fresh were excellent and the carrots were really good. Service was quick and they have a patio. Wonderful place!! We started coming here because we read that it was rated as one of the top 10 Mexican Taco Shops in San Diego! We were not disappointed one bit! We’ve been coming here since 2003!! Atmosphere nicer than most of the little taco places in San Diego and there is also a very comfortable outdoor eating area with a propeller sized ceiling fan! Clean and welcoming! DELICIOUS food! I love the bean tostadas. Quick, easy, healthy and a great choice if you’re not up on Mexican delights! Very quaint and friendly staff. The people taking orders at the counter are very nice!
