Curry: 4.5/5 This curry is very good. It is slightly sweet, savory, and has a depth to it. That being said, it stays within the parameters of a typical Japanese curry. The only thing that docked it from being perfect was that the texture was not perfectly smooth. There is this sort of floury grain to it that I associate with store-bought curries that took me slightly aback. I also sort of miss the flavor of having spiciness cooked in the sauce rather than just putting a powder on top. Oh, and more pickles!
Karaage: 4.5/5 The Curry Club does a phenomenal job at frying. The chicken was moist and crispy. I normally do not like karaage with my curry because it has that sort of karaage taste (ginger, soy, etc.) but this was recommended by my waitress and it was awesome.
Fried Shrimp: 4/5 Again, great fried shrimp, almost no notes. It DOES have that slight mushy texture right between the coating and shrimp that I really detest, but I have accepted that is just part of the experience at this point. Solid choice if you want seafood.
Ajitama: 5/5 This egg was shockingly good. It puts most of the ramen shops in San Diego to shame. Well marinated, perfectly gooey, a great balance between sweet and salty, the literal perfect egg. I’m not sure if it matched the curry, but I would just eat it as dessert to be honest.
Ambiance: The restaurant is casual but nice. I don’t see why you couldn’t make this a more special restaurant date.
Service: Service was very fast and kind. They “served” just the perfect amount.
Parking: The parking lot is a vast lot. Very...
Read moreWelcome back Zen Curry! After over a year of waiting, they’ve managed to keep their great flavors and quality service. Shout out to Mia and Sarah for the amazing welcome and service!
I got the Brisket Curry and my GOSH, DELICIOUS! That brisket was so tender I barely pressed down on it with a spoon to break it. You also can’t go wrong with their spam katsu, YUM! Their new serve your own spice is an excellent new welcome. If you’re a hot head, get that Wiri Wiri Powder, their hottest one, it blends soo well with the curry flavor. To wash down the heat, their classic milk tea hit the spot. All 10/10 food!
Mia and Sarah took care of us. They always came back to see how we were doing, refilled waters and took plates right away. They even pointed us in the right direction for that wiri wiri powder (Ty btw!) I also ended up getting one of their super soft T-shirts.
Please keep in mind that with any soft openings, there will be limited staff and hours. Especially with sit down restaurants, you’re going to be waiting for your food. This isn’t fast food. Normal times at sit downs from start to finish are anywhere from 40-60 minutes. Every group that waited with us before it opened, got their food within that time frame. If it was a bit late, they made amends and offered free food. That’s great service to me!
The Curry Club staff, you guys did great today. Thank you for your hard work and our group cannot wait to come...
Read moreWe had Zen Curry in the past and wasn’t a fan but decided to give The Curry Club a try, knowing that it’s a rebranding of Zen Curry. The old signs are down and the new one is yet to be put up.
Brisket curry was something they didn’t have last time but we got spam curry and chicken katsu curry with garlic chips.
We didn’t find the curry special. Tasted like The Golden Curry sauce mix that you get at the store plus spicing it yourself based on the 3 spice jars on the table was not why I wanted to eat out. I’d rather have a spice level from the kitchen than the option of spicing it more myself.
We also ordered Takoyaki which had too much batter and tasted doughy with few bits of octopus. Chicken karaage was juicy but the dipping sauce could have been a special house sauce than just Kewpie mayo.
Parking in this plaza was plenty but scarce because of other eateries...
