If you’re a fan of delicious pastries and charming atmospheres, look no further. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the cozy, inviting decor. It’s the kind of place you can’t help but smile when you walk through the door. The pastries here are nothing short of extraordinary. I tried the Nutella filled donut and it was a perfect balance of flaky, buttery layers and just the right amount of sweetness. Each bite was pure bliss, and you could tell that everything is made with love and high-quality ingredients. The variety is impressive too — from light and delicate to indulgently rich, there’s something for every craving. The staff is friendly and welcoming, always happy to offer recommendations or a friendly chat while you choose your treats. The shop itself has a cozy charm with a few seats where you can enjoy your pastries and coffee, making it the ideal spot for a quick pick-me-up or a relaxing afternoon break. It’s clear that this shop takes pride in what they do. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and stop by. You won’t regret it — this little gem is one I’ll be returning to often!

I dropped by one morning as the window display was too enticing. There were already two clients in front of me but worth the wait. Ordered a apple fritter which was delicious with the dough chewier than I am accustomed to. The jasmine tea paired perfectly and while I waited for it, they suggested I sit in the patio since the bench was occupied. Since there is only one person in the front, it took a while and despite a slight mixup with the change, I returned again this morning. I had a bread pudding which was crusty outside and chewy inside along with a little surprise on the bottom. Love their outdoor patio which is large with wooden benches and chairs but I do wish the prices are on the display so clients can prepare in advance if paying in cash and that it was more organized.

Great pastries make it one of my favorite places in the city, but the décor needs some work to match how nice the food is. Everything about the pastries was amazing. Literally wanted to try everything as it all looked so good. We did try the ham and cheese croissant (perfect), chocolate croissant (good but no Arsicault!), Kahlua chocolate bread pudding (good), and peach muffin crumble pie (delicious). Everything was great value as well. They could spruce up the décor a bit. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say the tables inside and rustic chic rather than just old, but the outdoor area at the back is in dire need of a clean up, and the bathroom need some sprucing. If they gave it a bit of attention it would make a huge difference to the overall ambience of the place.

  • In Short *

Next time, I'm trying the pies instead.

  • In Depth *

After taking my mom to brunch at Cassava, and in search of some sweets for the week, we end up venturing into the nearby Butter Love afterwards, picking up a number of classic baked goods, including:

Raised Sugar & Cinnamon Doughnut - Raised though they were, I found their doughnuts to be a bit harder and less fluffy than I typically like. Though, to be fair, my gold standard is the fresh-out-of-the-fryer doughnuts from Kingpin in Berkeley, and that's hard to beat.

Brown Butter Snickerdoodle Cookie - I'm not really a huge fan of snickerdoodle in general, so I may be biased here, but at the recommendation of the staff, and hearing that this wasn't a flavor they usually do, I picked up one. And, while nice and soft, I found the overall flavor to be a bit lacking and bland.

Chocolate Chip Cookie - Like the snickerdoodle cookie, this too, was fantastically soft when it was fresh. And, while not too sweet, as chocolate chip cookies tend to be, it had the opposite problem of being a little too bitter for my liking.

Mango Brown Butter Scone - By far my favorite pastry of the batch, with that nice crispy crust, strong mango flavor, and just a hint of sweetness to top it all off. While not as good as the ones at Arizmendi, it's definitely something I'd stop in for again.

Now, we had also been eyeing all the various pies, both sweet and savory, that they had on display there, ultimately not picking up any of them. Apparently this was a mistake, according to other reviewers, so I'll reserve further judgment until next time.

Accessibility Info

Venue - While not exactly small, the part of the bakery that's open to the public is only about the front third of the shop. Seating is a bit limited, so I'd suggest stopping in, picking up your goodies, and leaving. Both the counter display and the register are around your typical dining table height, so neither visibility nor getting and paying for your pastries should be an issue.

Bathroom -...

With a tinge of regret this review is written about Butter Love Bakeshop. Then again it might just improve customer service at this business. An online order was submitted about Xmas eve for some holiday fare items. In fact received a email indicating the items would be available for pickup on 1/03/25. Showed up at the bakery on 1/05/25 to collect my paid for items. Only to be told , in a rather blasse if not nonchalant manner that the items are no longer available , all sold out , really now if I recall I did receive an order confirmation .....so where are the items ordered and paid for ??......Sold out they said ........But you did get a refund . So, on two levels , the business practices are below par .......First of all, they sell out items which had been ordered and paid for ........poor busines ethics ........Secondly, there was no notification sent indicating the items would not be available after my 30 min trek to Butter Love Bakeshop.........Zero email or phone call which would have been the most basic gesture of courtesy in this instance.........Butter Love can do better and they know it.......What was sad to see was the absolute careless and a bit too cool attitude on display by the manager...
