Ordered the 10 piece set and my favs were the wagyu and toro hand roll. We were also offered to try the red snapper hand roll, which is off the menu, and my bf loved it! I highly recommend getting their pickled wasabi, it was such a delicious enhancement to each hand roll, and definitely worth the $4.50! We also ordered their rose and white wine and it was brought out in cans, I would not get the wine again if I come back next time.

Dined in on a Friday at 9pm and parking wasn't too difficult. Service was friendly and quick! This is a great place to splurge on a meal and enjoy the experience of watching your hand rolls being made.

Emily C. Union City, CA 123 11/19/2022 3 photos Finally had the chance to try Handroll Project, opened by the same team behind Ju-Ni!

As it was our first time, we opted for the sets: 5 and 7 pieces. My personal favorites were the salmon & sesame, toro takuan and smoked hamachi! The other rolls, although still good, felt pretty standard to me. If it's your first time as well, I'd recommend getting a set to see which rolls you like and ordering those specific ones if you were to come again.

Decent portion sizes and attentive service! Each roll was made only after we finished the previous one. The servers also refilled our water and ginger as soon as they noticed it was near empty.

All in all, it's on the pricier side but would recommend trying if you're able to snag a reservation - especially if you're a fan of hand rolls ~

Other FYI's: reservations can be made online via Resy 1 month out and will require a CC to complete booking. Street parking can be difficult so I recommend allotting 10-15 mins to find parking!

Amanda C.Elite 2022 San Leandro, CA 141143300 11/15/2022 1 photo2 check-ins Reservation opens a month out so plan ahead! They're very efficient here with the timing of each roll so you can be in and out in a little over 40min (not complaining). The two times that I came I opted for the 7 piece ($55) and it was enough. I didn't feel like I was missing much without the last 3 pieces.

I loved every one of them! My favorite was the spicy tuna with bits of crispy shallot and a hint of freshness from the shiso leaf. There were a few rolls with shiso leaf which can tastes a little citrusy and strong. I think it complemented greatly but it can be an acquired scent. Most rolls have a similar texture, which is tartar-like, finely chopped fish paste, so it was nice when a roll has ikura for the popping explosion, or pickled radish for an added crunch. Nori was fresh and best to eat each handroll right when it's prepared so the seaweed doesn't get soggy from the warm rice. Overall, I just really enjoyed the taste and freshness of each handroll and the aesthetic of it...

I had been there before and really wanted to take my friend there. We say down 10 minutes after our reservation because it’s impossible to get parking in that neighborhood (not the restaurant’s fault). I ordered a bottle of sake while we looked over the menu. We were never told that we had a time limit. By the time we had our 3rd of our 7 rolls, we asked to order another bottle of sake. We were denied because they had another reservation coming in for our seat in 15 minutes. We pointed out that we were not even halfway through our meal and when we sat down we were asked if we wanted to add starters and specials to our meal. Thank goodness we didn’t opt for that. It probably would have been put in a takeaway box and kicked us to the curb. The couple next to us asked to order another course and they were told that the manager said they could order only one more if they really wanted it because they needed to vacate their seat as well. It was really unpleasant and stressful. I understand that they are trying to squeeze in as many seatings as they can but it’s ridiculous when you aren’t even halfway through your prefix and made to feel that you need to leave. Our next couple of courses didn’t even come out until after the time they wanted us to be out. It’s really unfortunate. I enjoyed my first visit very much and wanted to bring my friends back. It’s a good thing there are other places in...

I think it is too expensive for the food and service you are getting. I tried KazuNori in Manhattan recently and I thought I should try this place when I return back to SF. I am already kind of against the price of a handroll as it is almost a glorified sea weed burrito (there are places doing it in the Bay Area) with $12.

food: Not impressive. Fish is not as high quality as a nigiri or a sashimi would be. Cutting the non good parts and serving the best is much important for nigiri and sashimi, but for this most stuff is very small pieces or almost grinded. Also, the required skill for a chef is much lower than the sushi chef.

atmosphere: the décoré is not super nice as you are looking towards a wall when you sit. I can understand that it is a bar, but other places and sushi places are much more transparent as you can see the chef working. They created a fancy vibe, but there are issues in the wall and waiter station doesn't look good. I can see labels of the seats etc.

I think the handroll should be much cheaper than this. As I said, it is a glorified burrito. The same price, you can easily eat nigiri. I think KazuNori and many others like here try to convince us that this is fancy and we should pay a lot for this. I don't think it deserves the price, I can go and get some poke bowl...

Over-hyped and not worth the cost!! If I’m being honest, my favorite part was just the pickled wasabi. We had to wait about an hour total to be seated after arriving about 20min before opening on a weekday (which isn’t bad compared to what some other people described the wait to be) However the entire experience felt extremely rushed so they could cram in as many people as possible. In terms of the atmosphere, I found it a little weird to have counter seating where the counter is so high such that you can’t see over to the other side. I would’ve loved to be able to watch the chefs do more of the preparation. While I did feel there were many creative dishes like the “dip n dots” style roll, overall the fish itself did not stand out and didn’t taste the freshest (maybe some is batch prepared?) - would encourage you to take a bite of the fillings plain to see what you think. If you were planning to get the 10 piece hand roll set I would recommend going to Wako instead which was much better for the same price point. If you insist on still trying this place, I would get at MOST the 7 piece set but personally I do not think it is worth coming here.
