Bi-Rite Creamery is located super close to Dolores Park and a few blocks away from Tartine's Bakery. It's also close to Philz Coffee, so if you manage to find a good parking spot, it's definitely beneficial to walk around the area to get a chance to taste (and drink) other popular businesses. And because Bi-Rite has 8500 reviews with an overall total of 4.5 stars, you can pretty much assume that there's almost always going to be a wait. Even they know it, so they have areas designated for the line so that you don't block pedestrians and other people walking down the street.
I came here twice, and both times I had to wait. But the line moves pretty quickly - and you're also anticipating good ice cream, so the wait isn't too bad! There are a variety of other items for sale - cakes, cupcakes in jars, pints to go, drinks, etc. - but people mainly come for the ice cream. There's a few tables and chairs in the store, but because it's quite small, I feel most people take their treats to-go and head over to the park.
Bi-Rite has their standard flavors, but every so often change it up to include a few seasonal ice cream flavors. I was able to try a Strawberry Balsamic, which was super refreshing on a hot day.
For the ice-cream, there are a variety of sizes in which you order - Kids (1 flavor) $3.25; Single (1-2 flavors) $4.50; Double (2-3 flavors) $6.00; Triple (3-4 flavors) $8.50. The ice cream scoops re quite big, so when I ordered a single with 2 flavors the first time, I had a hard time finishing the ice cream.
Honey Lavender: Too flowery and sweet for me. I didn't like the taste.
Strawberry Balsamic: I like strawberry ice cream, so I did enjoy the Strawberry Balsamic from Bi-Rite. However, I thought it had a strange aftertaste, which I did not like. The strawberry was refreshing, but the acidic aftertaste wasn't something that appealed to me.
Salted Caramel: It's a classic flavor, and Bi-Rite definitely makes this flavor well. It's rich and creamy, with enough saltiness and sweetness to create a swirl of complimenting flavors that smoothly slide down. It was tasty, but with the added saltiness to the ice cream, I felt like I constantly needed to drink water.
Crème Brulee: This was my favorite flavor! There's chunks of the burnt caramel mixed into the ice cream. Honestly, the best part of eating the crème brulee is breaking off the top layer of caramel and mixing it in with the custard. Finding those bits of caramel in the ice cream was a real delight, just because it was so tasty. The ice cream flavor itself wasn't too sweet, but had good custard and caramel flavor to it. It was super creamy and - just placing that bite into my mouth, made me want more. I would definitely recommend this particular flavor.
tl;dr - It's worth the wait! Crème Brulee is amazing, but I've also heard that the Roasted Banana is good.
Tips: -Order a kid's size if you only plan on eating one flavor. -I would recommend ordering the ice cream in a cup and having them place a sugar cone on top: best of both worlds! -Credit cards are accepted -They use actual silverware to taste test flavors, so I would say it's probably best to sample maybe up to 3 flavors at most. -There is a bathroom inside, which is super convenient! -If you don't get the Crème Brulee ice cream flavor, at least give it a try!...
Read moreTried many flavors in the store. This place really does not disappoint! Their basic flavors like cookies and cream and vanilla Have some uniqueness to it compared to what you would find elsewhere like Baskin-Robbins.
Candy Cane had strong flavors of candy cane. Not overly sweet, and they were able to balance the sweetness and the peppermint in their ice cream. Very good!
Honey lavender had a decently creamy texture. Had a strong floral scent, but not overpowering. Not too sweet. Very good!
Eggnog was absolutely the best I have ever tried! The employees told me that each scoop had roughly one teaspoon of brandy. The alcohol was strong, but overall a very strong balance of flavors.
Their ricanelas, triple chocolate coconut, and pumpkin cheesecake were beautiful done. The texture of the triple chocolate was velvety and the taste of coconut was apparent. The ricanelas was pleasantly sweet, and not overpowering. All three of these flavors managed to balance, sweetness, and richness beautifully.
The rose ice cream was amazing. I tasted a lot of rose essence , but was not overpowering , nor was it too sweet. I really like the floral hint of the flavor.
Earl Grey was pretty good, but I have had better. It could use just a slight bit of intensity, and then it will be perfect.
The candied spice and ginger ice cream was really good. All the flavors worked very well together. I like the bits of the ginger. It had a good texture, and was not overwhelming.
Overall, they do not skimp on the ingredients, and they are not cheap with it. The quality of the vast majority of their flavors are apparent to the taste. Definitely the top three ice cream shops in San Francisco. I will definitely visit again. Can’t wait for their next...
Read moreIn the slightly upscale Bi-rite market where you can get wholesome food, is a creamery that can satisfy your sweet tooth. This must be one of the best ice cream I had. It is not overly sweet and it just brings out the sweetness of it. The earl grey also has enough flavour. Love how you can get 2 flavours or 1 flavours for the same price, though you just get smaller scoops for 2 flavours, but it's more awesome to eat 2! Plus ice cream don't melt as fast in this temperature. They not only make the ice cream in house, they also have a bakery attached and make all brownies, marshmallows, toffee in the ice cream. They also make toppings such as peanut brittle and hot fudge. If you're lactose intolerant, don't worry, you can join in on the fun too, they offer a vegan, dairy-free ice cream daily!
