We were enjoying the beautiful mission till we got to graveyard and saw how the palm trees are taking over. These are the massive ones with huge trunks. The seedlings were all over the cementery and I spent about an hour pulling out the little palm trees growing all over. The grown palm trees with fruit discard hundreds of seeds that grow very easily. In my opinion, those palm trees need to be removed. Pretty soon, there will be no graves to look at. Also, the outside white figure of a saint, possibly the Virgin Mary, was urinated on, had graffiti and broken in some places. I live several hours away from the mission; otherwise, I'd volunteer to help preserve it. I pray that this matter will be address by the staff at the mission...
Read moreMy 10 yr old kids and I kids visited here yesterday. This is the oldest intact Mission in SF and the building was completed in 1791. Its adobe walls and original tiles on the roof are still in place. To enter the Mission, donations are $5/adult and $3/child. We first looked at the chapel and then the museum. In the museum are artifacts from everyday life such as tools, cooking utensils, games, musical instruments and jewelry. There is also a diorama of a the Yelamu Ohlone Indian Village of Chutchui. Next we visited the cemetery garden where there is a replica of an Ohlone Ruway small house. This was the first Mission we ever visited and I was glad to take the kids here to give them a sense of the history of the early...
Read moreA wonderful self guided tour. It reminded me of exploring old historic churches in Europe. The basilica is gorgeous. I got a lot more visceral sense of the history of San Francisco. (I never noticed before that the city is named after Saint Francis!) The people at the counter were very friendly and engaging; I got some spontaneous excellent restaurant recommendations from one of them and an education on cooking awesome gumbo from the other. The whole thing was $10, absolutely worth it. I’d take more experiences like this over most of the common tourist stuff anytime. If you have to choose between this and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, I’d for sure recommend this. Not as grand or famous, but far richer to see in person...
