PART 8: BEST MEALS IN SAN FRANCISCO <$30 #foodie #sanfrancisco #bayarea #bayareafood #creatorsearchinsights

I have to say, competition among restaurants is the best thing for customers. I live in a neighborhood where you can find five different Thai restaurants, in addition a few Korean and Chinese restaurants. However, I just love Thai food. So, why os competition so good for us food lovers? Well, at first it was Marneee Thai, years ago. Then their customer service and quality of food went down a few years back. Then the completion opened shop at various places. Then the pandemic hit. Once it was safe to go out again, I tried various Thai restaurants in my neighborhood. One of them was of excellent quality, better than OSHA Thai, which has no restaurant in my area. Their food was two classes better than I was used from Marnee Thai. I gave them a rave review. And then magic happened. I tried Marnee tonight, and I was totally surprised about the quality of their dishes. No more greasiness. No more poor service. No more overcooked rice. Everything was not just perfect for my taste. It was the first time that I tasted Thai food of such unexpected quality. It even tasted healthy. I had ordered three main dishes and my favorite dessert, sticky rice with mango. Every single dish was a symphony of flavor, color, and fragrance. The ingredients were absolutely fresh. The sticky rice with mango contained double the mango of competitors. And it was the ripe and juicy kind. What shall I say? Hi five to true competition and to the fact that competitors know about each other and then try to outclass each other.

Good ambiance, food and service. (3/5 green stars) Our appetizer was roti paratha with peanut-curry sauce ($9) – this was very tasty but considering it was a few pieces of fried bread and a small bowl of sauce, $9 was a bit excessive. The cocktail – pomegranate martini ($7) was the reverse situation: surprisingly cheap but not terribly strong or interesting. It was fine though. The main course, a pumpkin curry with tofu ($12) was good – flavorful even though it was mild (on request). Overall: a decent meal, nice ambiance, good service. I’m also giving Marnee Thai 3/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • A decent number of dishes are vegetarian or can be made vegetarian. A few are vegan. • Family-owned business. • The website has plenty of information about the chef and his background, their awards, and even videos from TV shows like Check Please, but virtually nothing about the ingredients. • To elaborate on that, the website has about 600 words decided to chef Chai Siriyarn, a whole webpage dedicated to reviews and press coverage, but only 3 words dedicated to ingredients: “…freshest seasonal ingredients…” Nothing on the menu either that I could see. • So, with all of that, I’m giving a neutral 3/5 green stars.

After eating our take-out order from San Tung and finding ourselves still a bit hungry, my friends and I decided to walk over to Marnee Thai. The reviews looked promising and even though they were preparing to close for the night, the servers still welcomed us in.

The restaurant is fairly big, but more narrow than wide. There's a slight tinge to the lighting, making everything seem more subdued and quiet.

With the six of us having slightly full stomachs but room to still eat, we all ordered smaller dishes and shared items amongst the rest of us. I'm not the biggest Thai food fan and don't particularly care for any specific dish, so I just ordered a simple spring roll dish. I don't have any complaints about the dish - it was simple and what I expected. There were six spring rolls stuffed with cucumber, lettuce, carrots, etc. and came with a side of peanut sauce. I wouldn't say the dish was memorable, but it was good for the price.

Their Pad Thai dish was also quite tasty. This dish was a lot better than my simple spring roll dish - the flavors were on point, there were lots of ingredients in the dish itself, and it looked good. I'd probably order this dish again. My other friends tried the curry and Pad See Ew, and both dishes were highly praised by them. Good flavor and a good number of ingredients in each one.

Overall I would say a pretty solid Thai food experience. I liked the food here, but since I rarely get a Thai food craving, I probably wouldn't be back. But from what I tasted and the service we received, I have to give this...

I had this place on my list for awhile as it came highly recommended by various friends across the city. Unfortunately, I found it to be a solid "ok".

Came here on a Tuesday night with three friends for dinner. We were able to get a table for four on arrival (around 7pm), which was great. We ordered a bunch of food, family style.

Angel wings: 3-stars. The wings were absolutely covered in garlic. Like large diced chunks of garlic just mounded on top of the wings. The sauce itself was a tad sweet and sticky, but the garlic overwhelmed any other flavor.

Papaya salad with soft shell crab: 4-stars. The crab was cooked well, crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside. There was a good meat-to-crust ratio, but with just two pieces of crab, this salad needed more. The papaya was fresh but could have used just a slight kick.

Panang beef: 3-stars. Cubes of flavorful beef with a side of broccoli. The flavor was on point for the beef, but the meat was overly stringy. The broccoli was boring, served completely plain on the side without any sauce and it could have use a little garlic or spice or something.

Roast duck: 4-stars. Probably my favorite dish of the night. The duck was fatty, tender, and delicious, with a deliciously sweet glaze. The greens accompanying the duck were quite overdone, but they still gave a nice bitter taste to cut through the sweet fattiness of the duck.

Overall, nothing to write home about and certainly not worth going out of your way for, but an ok place if you're in the...
