I did not expect to be writing about this place but I stopped in there a few nights ago and was pleasantly surprised. I rarely go out to Indian restaurants but that may be a habit I should change - it was a great meal, great service, and not too hard on the budget.
Mission Curry House is a newer addition to the Mission strip and still somewhat fitting in - it is presenting itself as a place with a little bit of swanky dinner feel and not as an Indian buffet like the well-known Pakwan.
It's pretty large inside, there are linen on the tables, cloth napkins, table service, and the waiters are well dressed and polite.
In other words, it is a little more pricey but you do get a bit of the ambiance of a quaint upscale dinner date or a classy get together depending on the occasion.
We had a couple of delicious mango lassis, samosas, some friend spinach (forget the name), tandoori chicken, and lamb biriyani. It was probably the best meal I've had in a while. The lamb and chicken were really tender and everything else was cooked very well.
The samosas were crispy and soft inside. The spinach dish was real crunchy - kinda like deep-fried seaweed.
An important note: I ordered mild (not spicy) and the seasoning was actually very mild, more so than I would expect. So if you have a taste for that real hot unbearable burn - make sure you let your waiter know.
Other than that - a great place to get some Indian food in a nice atmosphere! And pretty affordable - the whole meal for 2 was a...
Read moreI've had this place on my "to-eat in sf" list for a while now and was finally able to enjoy it. I brought a Nepali friend wit me as well and she loved it just as much as I did.
The server was very kind and attentive and did his best to always make sure we were doing well. My friend spoke to the two servers in Nepali and was happy to be able to use her native language with the locals in the city. This is also how we found out that the restaurant owner is probably from Nepal which is what made the food so delicious and a great mix of Indian and Nepali flavors.
The chicken momo was the first thing that came out and was visually beautiful and the flavors were truly outstanding to the point of it being some of the best momo I've tried in the bay. The chutney that accompanied it was so good my friend made sure to leave the container clean.
My lamb vindaloo was again some of the best I've had. Not too spicy and not too mild. That along withe the cheese garlic naan was delicious and worty of another trip back.
The chicken biryani my friend ordered was just as delicious as the rest of the foods and I would've loved to have more of it but I was stuffed with everything else!
Cannot recommend this place enough....
Read moreExtremely rude customer service. I went for dinner with my friend who is a South Asian woman, only to be belittled by the waiter until we decided not to put up with it anymore. Our waiter made a series of demeaning comments starting with him asking if I was "lost" while looking through the menu, then being told "that's a lot of food" as I was placing our order. Eventually we were told we could not eat our order at the restaurant and we'd have to take it to go, despite the fact that he had seated us to dine in and already took our drink order. At this point we just paid for our drink and left. With these clear attempts to demean us, it is hard not to conclude that the server felt threatened by a white man and a brown woman getting dinner together. What is this, the 1950s? Projecting your insecurities onto others is even more insane when it causes you to lose business. I will...
