Casual order-at-the-counter Ethiopian food in West SOMA.
Came here on a Monday around 12:15pm with a couple of coworkers. I had never heard of this place but we found it on Yelp and we were hungry and willing to give it a shot. The place had a few people in it, but it certainly wasn't full... never sure how to read that around lunch time in a crowded area. Hidden gem or bad food?
We shared the veggie sampler platter, plus chicken tibs and beef tibs. The chicken was, by far, the star of the meal. We ordered both the chicken and beef spicy, and I'd say both were flavorful but not spicy. The veggie platter has collard greens, a yellow pea stew, a red lentil stew, and some mixture of carrots/onions/green beans. The two stews were good, though nowhere near as flavorful as the chicken or beef. The collard greens were overwhelmingly bitter and the carrot/onion/green bean mixture I found to be boring and a mixture of flavors that weren't unique to Ethiopian cuisine. I'm glad we had the two meat samples to make up for it.
The whole thing cost about $40 before tip, which I thought was a bit much for three people given the quality. It was a lot of food, but I'd prefer to pay less and have it taste better. If I come back, I'll stick to...
Read moreI HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CUTE LITTLE ETHIOPIAN CAFE/RESTAURANT TO EVERYONE.
Moya used to be somewhere on 6th & Folsom until the SRO building above it BURNED to the ground. The rumor was some idiots decided to outdoor BBQ, INDOORS, and thusly, burned down not only the residence of hundreds of people, but also the livelihood and dream of the owners of Moya, who had barely opened up their restaurant. It was truly awful and tragic.
The new place is bright, clean, and the ladies who own & work here are all so friendly and genuine. You may look at the prices and be shocked that it seems a little overpriced, but bear in mind that every dish you order comes with 1) a side of (a lot of) injera bread, a spongey, sour dough rolled soft bread you use to sop up the delicious sauces, 2) a side of salad, and 3) other random vege sides!
The Doro Wot is sort of like Filipino chicken adobo (right down to the boiled egg) and it IS spicy, so proceed with caution. But it is DELICIOUS. It's rich, slightly sweet, incredibly flavorful, and delicious. The veggie sampler is ginormous, and comes in a giant pan of injera bread. It's like a dream come true for greedy fat vegetarians and honestly,...
Read moreMoya is a superb spot for Ethiopian food in this part of the city. Came here after another spot nearby was closed unexpectedly and so glad we did.
We came right as they opened for dinner so the service was quick and easy.
The food came out in less than ten minutes and what a feast it was. The vegan sampler platter was enormous contrary to the photo of it looking like a grain bowl. Everything on it from the greens to the lentils was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. Enough to feed 2+ people for sure.
I also had ordered a spicy tofu dish as well and THAT was something else. I don't see tofu being used often in Ethiopian restaurants but this was really a hit. Savory, spicy, and filling.
Our meal came with a side of injera and I was shocked at how fast it came out too. The quality of the injera was great too and made for the perfect vessel to get all the tasty food...
