Overall, Assistant Community/Property Manager Ashish Bartaula displeased my overall experience for the duration process of scheduling a pest control treatment in my apartment. Not only did Ashish and the office of 1190 Mission not get back to me through 3 different contact resources he and 1190 provided which included:
-via phone number / delivered imessage text he had on his email signature contact on May17th -the main office’s number where we briefly spoke on the situation, I asked if pets could stay, he barely tells me the day before they can’t stay, so he says would get back to me but never did! via the resident portal app
Ashish and the GreyStar team brought a high risk of my cats being harmed due to lack of communication from Ashish and I along with the pest control team.
For example, because I was not being contacted/ responded to through the 3 ways I reached out, I had no choice but to write a note on my door to request not having service the day they planned it. I have 2 cats and was not warned via the preparation packet that Ashish emailed me to remove pets, which is what I was waiting to get a response about in the first place because I needed confirmation to reiterate to Ashish I have no resource to remove my cats out of the apartment for the treatment and seeking commons ground on how to go about it.
At around 9;30 am on Thursday May 30th, pest control came to the 20th floor to do other rooms, and I looked through the peep hole to see them reading my sign I wrote in front of my door that read, “please do not come in, I have made several attempts to contact your office but have not got a confirmation. I have two cats who can not be removed from the apartment, please do not enter” A few hours later, I find a response on the paper with PENCIL writing saying “contact your leasing office, you can not refuse service” this is horrible, this is not only the ONLY response I’ve gotten from anybody representing 1190 Mission St/ GreyStar, but it’s bluntly obvious I’ve been trying to do that, it’s clear there’s no solid communication between any of the departments. if I didn’t write a note on my door and had work or was not there, my cats could’ve been harmed because of this mistake !!!!!!!!!!!!
The WORST PART OF THIS, when I connected with Ashish in person on May 31st at around 1pm to see what was going on, he showed no empathy and was far from apologetic. He kept making excuses why he didn’t contact me. First he said he didn’t contact me because he was waiting for pest control to get back to him (then why was pest control at my door at 9;30am that day and telling me to contact my leasing office?) Then he denied the phone number I texted him at claiming it wasn’t his. I showed him the email he sent to me on May 17th with that phone number. His response “Oh yes I changed it” my text delivered, he could’ve responded and said to contact him a different way, given an update on the situation, or just respond through the other 2 ways I contacted him at !! Lastly, the only notifications I got through the resident portal app was Katie S opening concern reports and documenting but that’s it. She didn’t comment on any of them responding to my concern, there was no personalized messages from Ashish or Katie S to give me any conclusions on my concerns through the app.
At the end of my attempt to find a conclusion with him in person, it was Katie that stepped in and tried to find a conclusion with me (where we see that Ashish gave me the wrong preparation packet via email from the beginning, causing the removal of pets confusion from the start!)
I’ve lived here for 3 years now and never been so dissatisfied. Especially because Ashish is the most familiar face out of everyone there, it’s clear the team comes and goes often but I’ve been helped by Ashish throughout my 3 year residency, so I’m shocked with how he went about the situation. He lacked communication, confidence, responsibility, accountability, and conflict resolution during this whole process. His lack of words...

Laundry machines constantly broken, elevators often broken. When I first moved in, one of the elevators was down for like 8 months, and it’s been several times that all elevators have been broken and I’ve had to walk up to the 18th floor.
Numerous laundry machines have taken my money without running and when I brought this up to management they just gaslit me about it but the problems persist.
Massive gnat problem in the hallway. I’ve blocked under my door but they’re still getting in over the top.
Not compliant with fire safety codes. When a fire alarm went off, the firefighters who came gave the guard on call a very stern talking to because the building was not following basic safety requirements.
Parking is obscenely expensive, $405 per month, yet there is human poop in the 2nd level doorway at least once a week that often takes 3-5 days to get cleaned up.
They replaced security guards last April with a sign that just says guard on patrol, only reinstating guards when someone was murdered on our block in July. Even then, security leaves at 9pm and I’ve seen people camped outside in the doorway lighting fires overnight.
The gate out to Market Street was out of service for 9-10 months. They’ve finally fixed it, but it’s never open. They don’t maintain basic amenities.
They’ve spiked up charges for trash and water saying they’re catching up for something in the past, but I need to know how to plan my finances and having a $10 charge jump to $50 with no warning is super lame. And of course it hasn’t gone back down from the higher amount.
If I break my lease early, not only should they not charge me a penalty, but they should pay my deposit on the next place because this building is a dystopian nightmare. Also my neighbor was in an abusive relationship (I think — I don’t know her) and this guy came back this past week screaming obscenities at her door. Who knows how he got in. I totally don’t feel safe here. Civic Center is a mess, but this building specifically is just a terrible situation. My actual apartment once I’m in it is nice but the scenario overall is just gnarly.
Do I recommend it? No....

I am beyond disappointed with the management at 1190 Mission. Over a month ago, my package was stolen by one of the tenants, confirmed through security footage. Despite this clear evidence, management did very little to resolve the situation. It’s been more than a month, and I’ve given up on getting my package back. I haven’t heard any real updates regarding the actions that have been taken, and it honestly seems like they just don’t care. They’re protecting the thief more than the residents who actually follow the rules and pay rent.
I’ve been going to the office every day for weeks trying to get an update on my stolen package, but Tyler, the assistant community manager, keeps putting me off with vague promises, saying he’ll update me by the end of the day tomorrow — promises that are never kept. Even when the police came twice, they were disappointed by how little help management was willing to provide. They kept passing us from person to person, building to building, with no clear direction or support. Tyler remained silent and unresponsive, despite knowing exactly who is stealing residents’ valuable packages and being the person most involved in all the conversations I’ve had during this time.
So far, this is the fourth package I’ve lost this year. Just two weeks ago, I received a phone call about a package that was lost three months ago, which I was sure had been delivered to the office. After checking three times, I was told they didn’t have it. It wasn’t until Lisa, who’s new to the leasing office, saw the package in the office and decided to reach out. The rest of the team never bothered to follow up on it, even though my package had been there the whole time.
It’s incredibly frustrating that management has failed to take any meaningful action or protect its tenants. If you’re considering moving in here, I strongly recommend you think twice. There are known thieves in this building, and management will not help you if something happens to...
