Yungho Cafe was a bit of disappointment. We drove from San Diego to San Gabriel to try out this Taiwanese cafe for their breakfast items. This is a no frills cafe. You have to order your food at the cashier counter and have to find your own table and when food is ready, they will bring it out to your table. Cashier spoke mandarin with broken English so there’s a bit of slight language barrier to communicate when we ordered. We ordered: ginger peanut soy bean tofu, porridge with preserved eggs and pork, braised minced pork with rice and marinated egg and black sesame soy bean milk soup. The only dish we really enjoyed eating was the braised minced pork with rice and egg. Big disappointment was the chef specialty dish, black sesame soy bean milk soup which was bland, watery and not enough sesame in the dish. Porridge was decent and the ginger peanut soy bean tofu was served lukewarm at best with little gingery taste and this dish got spoiled very fast, so the tofu was probably was not made fresh. Pricing was budget friendly but food quality was subpar. We...
Read moreAlthough this place serves Taiwanese style food, I think the food is from a region that's not what I'm accustomed to. The food here isn't bad, but the taste was not what I expected. The traditional "Stinky Tofu" was stinky enough (it's suppose to really stink like rotten tofu but was nowhere near it). It was also more doughy towards a donut texture, while the ones I'm use to were light and fluffy and had a slight chew to it. Their spicy wonton was just not good. The texture was more like a beef ball in a wonton wrap where I prefer it to be a true light wonton. The "Ma Po Tofu" was spicy from the pepper but besides that it didn't have the traditional flavors.Their Oyster Pancake actually had good flavor and was made correctly, sadly though there was too much corn starch used in the sauce and it clumped up shortly after.
Still, this place has some loyal customers and some swear the food is authentic. Unfortunately I'm not one of...
Read moreCame here for the 2nd time for breakfast, with lots of time apart in between. it is one of the raved spots for taiwanese breakfast, or so was the thought. however - it hasn't been my favorite taiwanese spot, and I think mainly its because the food isn't as flavorful as I would have hoped.
I got the green onion pancake with eggs, the taiwanese donut, and the salty soymilk.
They are basically cash only ($30 minimum - which for 1-2 people seemingly is impossible but possible to get to).
There is a parking lot shared with other shops, and lots of tables. It is self seating, as in you would have to order, and then take the seat, but also noting to the cashier which table you are seating, for those - you are to pay at the end.
Since its almost self service, do note they still expect tips.
I would come back and try different dishes, but I might skip the ones I have already tried for that very reason above.
Staff are all very...
