A honest review of the food, service, and environment.
Food: This place has possibly the best falafel sandwiches I’ve ever had in my life! The sauces were out of this world too. We got the daily special that is large falafel sandwich with banana drink, hummus plate, and pita chips. Everything about the food is kisses fingers PERFECT.
Service: as I walked up to order, I felt incredibly rushed. The ordering young man was very nice and even helped me is the best choice. But upon picking up my order, the old man who was handing out the order was incredibly rude (I think he thinks he is funny), rolled his eyes at me and my other friends because we asked for water cups. (Although before we asked, we heard him being super nice to these other couples in front of us, so idk if it’s discriminatory, just choose to not see it that way.) So then I thought my order was done so I went to grab it. And he snatched it back saying ‘DONT GRAB THE BAG, THATS RUDE’ as if he forgot he’s the one who handed it to me. I think he forgot I had an order of pita chips and was startled that I grabbed the bag. He then proceed to glare at me as I left the place...I just wish for him to be happier in life.
Environment: lastly, there were many pigeons…it’s ridiculous. There is a sign on the window that says ‘please do not feed the pigeons’, I understand it’s an outdoor seating, it’s just a...
Read moreLet me tell you about a Silicon Valley gem that's been serving up happiness since 1965 - Falafel's Drive In, a San Jose institution founded by Anton and Zahie Nijmeh in 1966 and co owned by the incredible Jack Nijma (pictured) and his siblings. This isn't just another restaurant; it's a place where memories are made and friendships are formed over some of the most mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine you'll ever taste.
I first discovered this culinary treasure back in '91 during my days at Lam Research, and I've been hooked ever since. There's something magical about watching first-timers take their first bite - that moment when their eyes light up and they realize they've just found their new favorite spot.
What makes Falafel's Drive In special isn't just their incredibly crispy falafel or their perfectly seasoned hummus (though trust me, they're worth the trip alone). It's the warm welcome you get from the staff, the familiar faces of regulars who've been coming here for decades, and that wonderful old-school drive-in atmosphere that takes you back to a simpler time.
If you're looking for authentic flavors, generous portions, and service that makes you feel like family, swing by Falafel's Drive In. After all, there's a reason this place has been a local favorite for 6 decades - some things just get...
Read moreI’ll add my voice to the chorus of reviewers who have praised Falafel’s Drive-In. This oddly-named restaurant isn’t owned by someone named Falafel, and it’s not a drive-in, but who cares when the food is so good!
I love their signature Falafel on pita bread and a small sandwich is usually enough for lunch. The falafel balls are crispy on the outside with just enough spice. I’ll echo what others have said about their terrific hot sauce which is unfortunately only drizzled on the top instead of mixed throughout.
They also offer gyros, kofta, humus, tabbouleh, baba-ghanouj, and other authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food as well as classic American fare like hamburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. There are plenty of choices for vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Prices are reasonable given the quality and quantity of food.
You order at the counter and can take your food to go or share a picnic bench and enjoy the outrageously creative and colorful murals which line the walls of the partially enclosed dining area. Try to beat the noontime lunch crowd because parking is often hard to find and lines can be long. But at least the food comes out quickly.
The Nijmeh family has owned and operated Falafel’s since 1966 and have built it into a local institution. It’s open every day for lunch and...
