Sushi Zen is now SUSHI SAN. Did it change hands? DO NOT CONFUSE IT WITH THE GARISH CHINESE SUSHI HOUSE RIGHT NEXT DOOR! I went there 8/21/14 by myself. It was walking distance form my hotel. I had first suspected this might be good as i could see it was a GREAT Saki bar, and I was VERY happy with the Saki they recommended. I had never seen it before. The sushi presentation was straightforward and simple. No adornment whatsoever. NO ART. I was preparing to read as I ate my dinner, until the first bite..... I am from Cape Cod. I am a Cape saltwater fly fisherman. I know what fresh tastes like. Instantly, this was no Chinese Sushi Bar. The owner /Chef was obviously Japanese, but worrisomely, he had a Caucasian apprentice? THE FISH WAS LIKE NONE I HAD EVER TASTED. each and every bite. I had ordered their "special Sushi" Omakase Nigiri, and asked if he would also include Sashimi in the mix. The Chef was careful to inform me that would cost more. I said : Please Go Ahead!" The fish was so good, SO GOOD, I had to tell them. Then Adam, the white Sushi chef tells me sheepishly, HE made my dinner! I was struck dumb. I then ordered a ROLL , Chefs choice, and it was GREAT, and very generous of portion. I had also ordered edamame and Seaweed salad, as I need greens . I then ordered Tako, my favorite, and it was good, but not as good as everything else. I highly recommend this simple and sublimely EXPERT sushi bar with their excellent and skilled Chefs. I will not go back to San Jose without visiting this wonderful find again and I hope it is as good as was my first most...

It was amazing. We picked this place because they're open until 11pm on a Thursday and everywhere else was closed or closing by 10pm when we were looking around 8:30pm. I went with 3 people. We ordered gyoza, edamame, some nigiri, some sashimi, hot sake, and 8 rolls 😅 We had a giant order so I wrote it down. Our server took our order then made sure to read everything back to us (partially out of disbelief of how much we were getting 🤣)

We got our gyoza and edamame first and played cards at the table while we waited. We always had full water glasses and our server was very nice. Once the sushi started coming out, we were worried our hearts had been bigger than our stomachs for a moment, but only a moment. Everything was so so so so good we finished all of it. We got the first few rolls and by the time we had cleared a plate, we'd get the next one. It was paced perfectly. Everything was absolutely delicious. Our server jokingly asked if everything was okay. "I set it down 5 minutes ago and now it's all gone!"

There was one chef in the kitchen making ALL the orders and he did an amazing job. There were maybe 4 other tables with people in the restaurant with us? And it never felt like we had too many things on the table at once. It was paced perfectly. Might be my new favorite...

The "Happy Hour" that wasn't so happy! I saw this place on 1st Street when I was on my way to the office. I noticed a sign that said 99 cent sake and 20% off sushi... happy hour 5 pm to 7 pm. The exception being sashimi and nigiri. No problem, we go in to eat. Have our "Happy Hour" sushi and saki. I find out that everything that I ordered was full price! I mention to the waitress that people should be notified on what is 20% off and what isn't. Not that I'm a cheapskate... but this is deceptive advertising. I even took pictures of the place and the banner to show proof. Granted I only had one item that was Nigri (okay, no problem). My problem is... the waitress should inform everyone when they sit down during 5 and 7... what the happy hour 20% items are. I suggest you go to Kazoo Sushi on Jackson Street in Japantown. They have fresher Sushi, better prices, great customer service and no deception. This was the first and last time I will be going to Sushi Khan. Sushi Khan is probably thinking, "who cares we don't need people like her"... But they are wrong... they do. Because dining and social media is all part of the experience, right? Bad experience = bad review. Sushi Kan accurately lives up to it's name. You've been conned at Sushi Con....

I'm giving this place four stars based on the sushi being good, maybe not great, but the people that work there are pretty cool. This place has been struck pretty hard by COVID, so you see a lot less people there than normal. Above the sushi bar, there's a collage of photos from when this place was generating a lot more business, and now the slowdown can be seen in how the ingredients are stored at the sushi bar. Instead of having everything sprawled out across a platter where it's easy to see, most of the items are partly wrapped or found inside of Tupperware. I can't say the sushi was bad, because it wasn't, but considering the situation, I surely haven't tasted it at its best. The people there are extremely nice, and since there were not a lot of other customers in the building, they spent a lot of time conversing with me about some pretty interesting subjects. The sake special is one of the best reasons to visit this place, as it's buy one get the other for like 10¢, and overall, it's still one of the best experiences you can have in the Bay Area.

We visited Sushi Kan because of its great reviews. We were overall quite happy with our experience but the sushi and sashimi could've been better. Just to get clear, the other dishes we had were quite delicious - bulgogi, udon, rolls, etc. But they weren't special nor authentic. Just a good decent tasting food. But obviously a sushi restaurant must be judged by its sushi. We did the chef's special nigiri+sashimi. Everything felt average. Decent fish, decent portions... but nothing to command such a high Google review score. I wish they'd have more "high end" pieces (ie. hotate, toro) rather than sprinkle with regular tuna varieties. The server was super nice and friendly which added to the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong. Definitely one of the better sushi joints but nothing worthy of 5 stars...
