Better Half Family Diner — Restaurant in Sandusky

I mean, I love me a good mom and pop joint. We were in town for a festival going on on the lake, and a local we asked mentioned this place, and the reviews sounded good.

The special of the day was prime rib dinner for under $15, with 2 sides, so hubby and I opted for this after the waitress spoke highly of the cut and slow roastedness. Our waitress was fantastic and super friendly. The only issue was that they only had one waitress staffed... On a weekend... With a big event in the area... The poor girl was all over both sides of the restaurant, and somehow still managed to be pretty on top of things.

And the steak was huge! Had about 15-20% fat on it but still not bad for the price. The mashed potatoes and gravy were super lacking and didn't have much taste to them other than kind of off.... Salad was normal, ranch was good. A few people came in for ice cream, as one side has a huge ice cream counter... But the waitress I guess was expected to work that and specifically told the people she wouldn't be able to help them. They lost out at least 8 people just for that that day.

Overall it was just ok. Service when it was there was great, but the owners/managers need to step up their game... Not even sure there was one on...

Hello and good morning everyone my name is Jay, I’m a 21 year old visiting home and on 10/06/24 me and my bestfriend decided to get breakfast at a small town favorite. We were told to seat ourselves by a very kind man and a couple second later he met us at our table to get us drinks. We were told that our server heather would be with us very soon. The servers were greeting/talking to everyone in the restaurant and being extremely friendly so we expected the same. Even though we waited at least 15/20 min before she came over when she finally did she did not greet us at all and didn’t even look at us. She looked down at her notepad and asked us if we were ready to order. My friend politely said not yet even though we were ready, she wanted her to leave because she felt uncomfortable. Me and my friend are both servers and thought we were gonna be treated a bit different, especially seeing how they interacted with everyone else. To add the restaurant was filled with majority white people (which shouldn’t matter) besides me and my friend plus a couple cooks. Not trying to assume anything but I really am disappointed in our service and the way we were treated at this...

I came in while showing my parents around Sandusky. I love taking then to local spots as I'm the only one in the family who lives up here, so they often only get to see what I show them. The reviews here were super good, so we decided to stop by. Upon entering the door we were promptly told to leave because they "didn't have anymore tables".... not once were we able to ask how long the wait would be, plus we were fine waiting for a table. We knew that at breakfast time, most places were going to have a wait. We were told no less than 4 or 5 times to leave because of the lack of tables, and we were told to do so in quite a rude tone. I work at a place where guests yell at me daily, so I understand that sometimes you just get into a bad mood because of it, but that's still not the best way to treat someone who hasn't done anything but walk into your restaurant. Plus, right after we left, someone else left one of the tables... so if we were able to wait for less than a minute there, we would've been able to get a table. Really disappointing, and sad I didn't get to try the food, since I won't be...
