There's no doubt Hotel Kilbourne is charming and definitely gives a unique, small boutique hotel experience, especially after staying at Hotel Breakers two evenings prior to, BUT...expect not to have a guest attendant on-site and when you paid for a room with 2 king-sized beds, for 2 adults and 2 teenaged kids, one would assume 4 towels would be provided. Not that big of a deal however there's not an attendant around in the morning, even after calling and leaving a message to simply get 2 more towels. Pretty loud. Be prepared for noise from the taco restaurant below and rooftop bar above. Bathroom was so super spacious however, super poor lighting...hard to put make up on. We stayed here when it first opened and loved it, still do, yet they really need to amp up the service, housekeeping (dusty over-priced drinks on desk in room, dead spider on window sill), and basic maintenance (paint touch ups needed throughout) would help keep this hotel looking fresh and hip...instead of heading down a dingy path. Appreciate all the pride signs posted on the front windows, but need to focus on maintaining pride in the business as well.

Service, rooms, and location were all excellent. I was blown away by the restaurant below and the quality of the hotel. In my opinion this is the nicest place to stay in Sandusky. We looked at nearby AirBNBs and there's one in the condos across the street, and that had an egregious $150 cleaning base-charge... And I feel like they'd have similar sound issues based on proximity (see below). Only caveat is that the walls / windows are 'thin' and you can hear quite a bit. However, that's something that I've mostly come to expect. During my stay I heard the trash truck outside at 7am... Not bad at all. No gripes about the sound but other people noted this in their reviews and while I can see how it is an issue for some, I've experienced worse at other hotels. Otherwise I really, thoroughly enjoyed staying at Hotel Kilbourne. The staff was awesome, the rooms were awesome, and the location is awesome (walked to Mr Smith's coffee shop every morning, walked to restaurants nearby for dinner). Note that the hotel is smaller than the average chain hotel, so you may want to book ahead of time. I Highly recommend Hotel Kilbourne!

What an amazing little hotel. The staff were pleasant and accommodating. She even took the time to show me many of the local places to see.The hotel itself is an original 1800’s bldg that has been beautifully renovated. The rooms are quaint but spacious, just big enough. The bathrooms roomy and clean. Even the stairs and hallways are bright and clean. There is an elevator as well. The In room coffee/expresso and snack bar with beer/wine in the fridge is a nice touch. They offer a breakfast bag in the morning from 6-9am. Downstairs is a wonderful restaurant along with a bar. Both of these places offer food/drink and outdoor seating. There is even a rooftop bar with amazing views. The patio faces out over Lake Erie. I found the location easy to find and very convenient to anything in downtown Sandusky. So many little shops and places to see. Overall a great hotel that is so far away from the cookie cutter hotels yet within the same price point. Will definitely stay here again.

Rooms would get a better rating because they are rather unique but there are two neon signs above the headboard with speakerwire like wires powering them. The cords are dangling from the signs and somehow ours got pulled lose from the signs overnight, no foul play goin on, and I was charged $160. I sent an email to the email listed on the website after I called and got no answer (likely because their front desk often not staffed when they have to step away to tend to the other 3-4 businesses operating in the same building). Its been 11 days and no response. Called on the 11th day and was told the email goes to the owners and I would need to speak with them about it. I tried. Sent followup today. I question the charge and placement of the cords with no securement/conduit to protect them from getting accidentally pulled. Betsys hands seem to be tied when it comes to disputes.

Location is great. Right in the middle of downtown adjacent to other bars and restraunts. Location likely keeps even those who dont want to spend $300/night coming back.

Service is spotty with the lightly staffed front desk and all the things the hotel has going on. Seems lean for a full service establishment.

$50 for late check out with no call/notice is a bit much. Hilton/marriot will typically call and ask or atleast have housekeeping knock on the door. I assumed/recalled noon checkout but was mistaken. I stay at boutiques across the country and have never been charged a late checkout without notice.

Otherwise, the place is reasonable. I understand some of the negative reviews (agree with some as well) but see the positives too. Seems its run from afar and err on the side of money. Cant say I wont be back but will definitely search out...

We had a very unpleasant experience with this hotel so we do not recommend this hotel to anyone! First, hotel front desk appeared to be nice but unhelpful. Upon checking in, I had asked if someone could help me with taking my 2 big suitcases to my room. I had my little boy with me so we just needed a little help. The front desk staff responded “sure”. So I went to my car, which is parked right in front of the hotel, thinking she would follow me. But nope, as I pulled my 2 suitcases and my son holding me, she pretended she didn’t see me. Completely ignored me. Thankfully, another lady saw me and offered to give me a cart. I took the cart, loaded it myself and pushed it to the elevator and to my room. As we entered the room, we saw an object on the floor, I picked it up and put it on the table. Looked like a remote control for the AC that used to be mounted on the wall had fallen off. There were 4 mall screws that supposed to hold it, but you as most of us know, unless there was a stud behind that wall, that thing will never stay. I did not think of it as anything. I picked it up and whatever. A day later after we checked out (we only stayed for 1 night), this hotel charged my card $250 for damage in the room. I called the hotel right away but front desk said the hotel manager was not in so she took my message. I sent an email and no response. I have contacted multiple times and emailed multiple times and I have not gotten any response from the manager of this hotel. Hopefully, this review will work and would get their attention (I hope so as it has been 1 week). This is unacceptable!

It is also very loud, we hear footsteps from the room above us. The bed is not comfortable at all. And room is...

This hotel nearly ruined our wedding. Aside from the onsite restaurant giving my husband and several others in our group food poisoning from the rehearsal dinner, the front desk manager made our wedding day a nightmare. We booked this hotel specifically because we wanted to get ready here and have pictures taken on the rooftop bar. When we checked in, we told the girl at the front desk we would have people arriving between 8-8:30 and to please let them know where our room was. To our surprise the following morning, the front desk isn't even staffed from 12am until 11am when the bar opens back up! So when you wake up and need more towels after your husband has been throwing up all night, there is no way to get any. When your hair and make up artist arrive, be prepared to run downstairs each time to let them in the front door. If you won't be ready to check out by 11am, (even if you have multiple issues caused by the hotel), be prepared to be charged or kicked out of your room! And then when we went to take our pictures in the rooftop bar, we were told we were not allowed because of a liability even though we were told ahead of time we could. Then to save face, they told us the door was frozen shut. The best part of all of this - when I spoke with the owner to see how she wanted to proceed in making the situation right, she offered us a night at the hotel or a gift card to the restaurant or gift shop, both of which are no use to us. I had really hoped that a business owner would want to make this right, but she showed no interested in that at all. Very...
