We were visiting from Indiana and were on the look out for a decent breakfast spot- something unique that offered good and satisfying food- somewhere that isn't Perkins or Bob Evans. We did a quick google search and stumbled upon this quaint, little place. The reviews told us all we needed to know and they were right! Port Sandusky Family Restaurant is easy to miss when driving by and especially if not from the area. Google took us right to the address. The building is unmarked and resembles an old storefront- so you're kinda left wondering if this is the place. Its on the corner and next to a thrift store and a Goodwill. Upon entering, you'll find its quite small and speaks of times past. Patrons are probably from the surrounding neighborhood and may turn and look to see who entered but don't be put off and walk out the door- everyone is welcome! Their menu isn't that of a Denny's, however, you wouldn't be searching if that's what you were looking for. They do have pretty much any breakfast item most places serve- including but not limited to- grits, oatmeal, cereal, omelet's, french toast etc. and its all made with care. As other reviews stated, all menu items are made to order. Portions are large and prices are low. Be prepared to sit, have a cup of coffee and a good conversation..... you may wait a few minutes 'til a waitress takes your order- this is not a franchise. It will take some time for your food to be made- be patient and you will be happy. Our food came out and we were more than satisfied with it. The fried potatoes are AMAZING! They're not bland hash browns and for that, I was happy! NO complaints here! If you're from out of town and craving a unique experience- stop here- it's different and...
Read moreIt is a shame. The food here is actually really good and you cannot beat this price unless you cooked it all yourself. They have several signs all over the place telling you that you will wait a long time. Mostly denoting that they are cooking from scratch and will not sacrifice quality for speed. Ok, I can accept that statement if I saw other things here. If they really wanted people to accept this then they should have some other things in place. For instance, be nice for heaven's sakes. There are three women who work here. Two of them seem to be mother daughter? The daughter is very curt. She kind of acts like she is doing us a favor for taking our order. Next, drinks. Ok, yes, you cook food from scratch, you take longer than normal. You are not making the drinks from scratch, refills on coffee and other drinks are few and far between. Cleanliness, it is quite worn out. I can usually get past this at diner types of places. But I can't get past people handling money, wiping tables and then serving food. I am by no means a clean freak, but it gets a little ridiculous. Then lastly the actual quality of the food. The food is good, just like you would expect for a greasy spoon diner. But we have been there a few times and there is always something incorrect. But because you have already most likely waited an hour or more for it, you just make the best of it. Bring it up to them and they shrug it off. Like deal with it. Maybe they could roll with this. Maybe they can advertise this place like the place in Chicago where they are purposely grumpy with customers and tell the customers to take what they get. Oh well, I think that we have to be done with this place. I just can't justify the...
Read moreI had been advised in advance that this is not the place to eat if you're in a hurry. Okay, so it was Saturday morning, I expect a small diner in a tourist town to be a bit busier so I allowed for that factor. However, the time noted on my check was 10:21 and I was told that there was ONE table ahead of me. Solo trip, I sat at the counter. I ordered the special, 2 eggs, toast, home fries & bacon - nothing fancy. I watched as SEVERAL tables received orders before me. When at 11:30 I asked if my order was coming, I was told it was "up next" (it wasn't). Finally, close to 11:40 I received my simple breakfast order. So, roughly 70 minutes from order time to eat time. Is that reasonable? Not for me.
How was the food? Average. I mean it's eggs and bacon. It sure wasn't worth that long of a wait. When I asked about the order, the waitress said rather flippantly, "That's why we have a sign". (it reads we will always sacrifice quality for speed. Which I think is meant to say speed, for quality?)
So okay... I won't be going here again. Why would I when as a local, literally, I could have walked home and fixed this breakfast meal three times over in the time it took to get my food? If you're in town and have lots of time to kill, I guess this could be a good...
