This is a hard review to write because I have loved this place for all the time that I have been in Utah. The drive from Ogden to the southern part of salt lake for the delicious food, the homely atmosphere and a selection of dishes not commonly found in other Peruvian restaurants was always worth the drive. That being said, my last visit was not as satisfying as they have been before and the service definitely not as good as a place with good rapport should have. Beginning with the papa rellena, which truth be told made it a good opening for our meal, made it evident right away that it was a little different than before with the huge amounts of raisins inside of it than one would normally expect in this dish. Since my partner was new to Peruvian food we decided to order some tried and true classics of Peruvian cuisine with the Arroz con Pollo and the Chaufa mixto. The arroz con pollo, decent though it was, gave quick evidence that something was wrong as the traditional peas and carrots that accompany that dish included sweet small kernel corn and green beans, clearly from a Frozen mixed veggie bag, which didn't make it taste any better. I substituted the chicken option for the duck because our waiter recommended it as it also came with Papa a la huancaina, another classic and usually exiting new flavor profile for first timers. Sadly, however, it's usually salty and spicy flavor, (aji Amarillo is a very distinct flavor).was replaced with a somewhat milky and bland sauce; the duck in the Arroz con pato turned out to be chicken. The Chaufa was delicious, no big disappointment there, but they sure could benefit from cooking the shrimp in different oil from the other deep fried seafood options as it was very rubbery and fishy. But again the rest of the Chaufa was very tasty and definitely reminded me of home. Perhaps it's because I have been to Peru in the past year and the flavors stay close with me even now. Maybe it's the equally amazing Peruvian food that I recently had in Florida that keep me close to all those flavors in aromas from my childhood. I don't know. But I was sad to feel like Puro Peru, would not satisfy those cravings the way it used to. I will probably return, but I feel like I will be returning in hopes to rekindle a passion that I once had for this place, and not looking forward to an the food experiences I had...
Read moreSad to see how much this restaurant has changed. We used to love coming here, but the last couple times we’ve had only bad experiences. Today we had a reservation for a large group a couple hours before closing. As we were ordering drinks we were informed that they didn’t have the signature Peruvian drink (chicha morada) and tallarín de huancaina because it was so close to closing and they couldn’t make more. We were disappointed, but understood it was closer to the end of the day and some drinks/foods wouldn’t be available.
We placed our order fairly fast since we’ve been there enough to know what we want. About 45 minutes after placing our order, our waitress came by to tell us that one of the plates we order was actually not available. We weren’t happy at all since it took them so long to let us know and then to be told that if we order something different it would be an ever longer wait. We decided to not add anything to the order and just share from the other plates we had ordered.
About an hour after placing our order the first plate was served. Obviously the people in our group that got their food first started eating, but the last plates were served 40 min after that first one! By that time the last two plates were served everyone else had finished eating. It was also almost time for them to close, so we ended up rushing to eat and getting containers to go.
To wait over an hour and a half and then feel rushed to leave was very upsetting. The service was also disappointing, our waitress came by just only to drop off the food, we had to flag her down to get refills on drinks, get ice, napkins or ask for anything else we needed. The food was ok, not nearly as good as it once was. It was definitely not worth the price of each plate. To say the least we will not be...
Read moreMy wife and I were excited in trying out Puro Peru, because it takes back when we were dating. So we found an almost full parking lot, which was a surprise and given the amount of cars we assumed that it would be a promising dinner. The place was packed, with hardly any tables available, so we had to wait 30 minutes. During the waiting time, some DJ started performing and it only got louder as he performed with karaoke songs.
We finally sat down at our table and we took our time to order the food, but I've noticed that a couple who had arrived after we placed our order got their appetizer soon after placing their order.
We both order the Lomo Saltado. They brought us 1 plate and took another 5 minutes to brings us the silverware. By that time, the food was cold. It took them another 8 minutes to bring my plate before I could eat.
The food had a good flavor and despite the fact that I offered my wife the first plate she probably didn't enjoy the cold food. I could possibly enjoy my plate more if it wasn't for the fact that after almost 45 minutes waiting for the food the karaoke was so loud that I didn't even finished my food.
Thinking that the loud atmosphere was unusual I asked one of the worker if it was normal to have that kind of loud atmosphere to which he replied that it was normal.
For a date night, I was looking for something more mellow and relaxing atmosphere, not what I experienced. The food was, on the other hand, flavorful deserving a 4 Star rating, but the AMBIANCE 0 Star,...
