Huxters Market & Deli — Restaurant in Sanibel

Vacationing in a pandemic is mostly to blame for this review. The world is in a strange place right now and people are falling through the cracks. I am a 45 year old man with breath limitations, due to a work place accident and an unpredictable heart condition that lowers my blood pressure and heart rate to extreme low numbers. Triggers such as heat, stress, carbon dioxide build up, dehydration and low oxygen levels are not good for anyone but for me it's down right bad. Due to the mask mandate, I have suffered as have many others with health limitations. I have been ordered by my doctor to not under any circumstances wear a mask or a face shield, as it interferes with the expulsion of carbon dioxide and heat so I fall under the medical guidelines of the exception and due to HIPAA laws you are not to ask about my medical condition. Guidelines are in place for people like me. Trust me, I understand that we are in a pandemic, the constant stares from strangers and the harassment that I endure from businesses and patrons for putting their heath in danger. Believe me I am quite aware of the pandemic. You do not have to be rude. If you don't welcome people with health limitations or people who are different than you, you can simply tell us that you are sorry and for the safety of others, you simply have to refuse...

This store is great! So convenient with delicious food in the deli, ice cold drinks, grocery necessities and an amazing milk shake machine! Huxters has been a Sanibel institution for decades and has recently undergone a beautiful facelift. The managers and staff are all very friendly and care deeply about their community. Like all other businesses on the island, masks are required by city mandate. I feel very safe on Sanibel and I appreciate the observation of the mask rule here. I usually always go to Huxters, well not anymore. We had a horrible experience. I was going to make a dessert so I called up there to ask if they had a couple of things. The first time they did not answer. Two minutes later I called again and they answered,but quickly hung up. I called one last time the young man that answered said I had called 5 times. He claimed they had caller ID and they know it is me calling. He said it might have been the kids or something calling. I don't even have children! I will NEVER go there again. Only Bailey's...
