I recently had the pleasure of visiting Mackai Island Kitchen and Groggery, located on Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, and I must say it was a truly memorable experience. This hidden gem boasts a captivating island ambiance that instantly transports you to a tropical oasis. One of the standout features of Mackai Island is their incredible tiki drinks. From classic Mai Tais to creative concoctions, their drink menu is a paradise for cocktail enthusiasts. Sipping on a perfectly crafted tiki drink while enjoying the stunning views of the wharf is an absolute delight. The food at Mackai Island deserves its own spotlight. The menu is a fusion of island-inspired flavors and fresh local ingredients. Each dish is expertly prepared and bursting with vibrant flavors. Whether you're craving seafood, meat, poultry, or vegetarian options, Mackai Island has something to satisfy every palate. Especially try the Chicken Tofu Lettuce Wraps, the Poke Bowl, and Gochugang Noodles with Chicken. What truly sets Mackai Island apart is their exceptional service. During my visit, I had the pleasure of being attended to by Lilliana, who provided top-notch service with a warm and friendly demeanor. Her attention to detail and extensive knowledge of the menu made the dining experience even more enjoyable. In conclusion, Mackai Island Kitchen and Groggery is a hidden gem on Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf that offers a tropical escape right on the edge of the bay. With its enchanting island ambiance, incredible tiki drinks, fantastic food, and exceptional service, it is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike. Make sure to ask for Lilliana, as her exceptional service will elevate your dining experience to new heights.

While cruising through Santa Cruz on vacation, we decided to try this restaurant due to the reviews. It is one of the better reviewed restaurants in the area. The location is amazing...you drive out on a little pier where there's a row of restaurants and shops. Lots of birds, seals and people fishing. Great place to hang out and enjoy the view. The restaurant itself is pretty cool, they have small windows in the floor so you can see the seals hanging out beneath the restaurant. The ambiance is the location, so we asked for a table by the window. None were available and the hostess didn't offer us an option to wait, she stated she could seat us in the bar area which offered rotating seating thus giving everyone an opportunity to have a window view. She said it was really nice and people like it, so we reluctantly went with it and hated it. It's like going from night to day several times while dining. As the wheel turns, you go from light bright to dark, then back to light bright, then dark. It was a very depressing experience for us. Also, within 5 minutes of being seated, all but one of their window seats became available. It would have been nice if hostess was attentive enough to realize almost everyone by the window had completed their meals and was getting ready to leave before she seated us on this rotating wheel. Nonetheless, we rotated for about an hour. Our waitress gave recommendations on drinks which we tried. Nothing eventful there, they were pretty but more fruity, punchy type of drinks. The food was decent. My husband ordered the burger, which was a bit dry but the mayo and pineapple salsa added a great flavor to the dish. I ordered the beef and chicken skewers. They lacked flavor but were edible. We were underwhelmed by the whole experience. Also, we got really annoyed with the waitstaff constantly walking by the table. They have to walk across the rotating wheel to get to the kitchen so they were constantly going around tables to get drinks and food which heightened the unpleasantness of the dining experience.

WOW! Words can’t express what an amazing experience we had with this restaurant and their team. We hosted our wedding’s rehearsal dinner and welcome party at Makai and it was the most magical and perfect night ever. Our guests are still talking about it weeks later! Throughout the planning process we worked with Anthony and he made the experience so seamless and smooth. Whenever we had questions or specific asks he was always available and extremely accommodating. At the event itself, the staff was extremely helpful, knowledgable and made sure all of the event details went perfectly. The cocktails and the food were both 10/10. Guests couldn’t stop raving about how fun the different drinks were and they had so much fun trying different ones. Not only were the drinks delicious but they were absolutely beautiful with gorgeous flowers, fun cups and unique garnishes. We had a seated dinner for the rehearsal dinner followed by passed appetizers at the welcome party and every single dish was absolutely delicious. Serving food all at once for a group of our size (45 people for the rehearsal dinner and 100 for the welcome party) is not an easy feat and every dish was perfection. The restaurants decor made for an extremely fun and unique experience too not to mention the ocean views are out of this world. We are SO glad we decided to do our event at Makai. It honestly made our wedding weekend and was an experience we will remember forever. Thank you so much to Anthony and everyone that helped make our tiki dreams come true!

Are you on the pier in Santa Cruz? If so, make sure you stop by the Makai. It's a cool spot with a beautiful view of the ocean. Make your way to the back circular bar, as it slowly rotates, giving you a various array of ocean views, and it's fun. The food is good, but the thing that appealed to me is their knowledge of rum and cocktails. The current owner is a fan of rum and the tiki scene. They have a bar manager who is a fan of rum and good cocktails. The bar staff is given training on the history of rums and the proper way to approach the creation of various cocktails. As a result, bar staff has contributed their creations to the menu. Drinks are tasty and well-balanced. This location does take a mixologists approach to cocktail making, as fresh juices and syrups are prepared in-house. This spot has a cool tiki vibe, I guess they would consider themselves as more of a location that specializes in rum. Either way, it's a cool spot with an amazing, very personable staff. They make sure you enjoy your visit. If you happen to have Jeremiah as your mixologist, he's amazing on all levels, and he'll make sure your drink is delicious and you enjoy your time there. They have mugs and glassware available for purchase, which are cool in appearance and make good take-home souvenirs. Parking is available on the pier, which is reasonable. Definitely pay this spot a visit, as it was a very pleasant awesome suprise!

My new favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz. It's location out toward the end of the wharf jutting out into the Pacific is ideal for a Tiki-themed restaurant and bar. Views out the large windows look right into the famed Steamer Lane surfing location. Tikis guarding the front door welcome you as you enter. The round bar area slowly rotates to give everyone seated there a chance to enjoy the view. Our group started out sharing a few selections from the enjoyable list of pupus. Poke Stack, Blackened Ahi Sliders, and Spam Musubi all went down quite well with Tiki mugs of tropical cocktails. The group really enjoyed the Mai Tai and Makai 75, but there are many other fascinating options to choose from. For an entree, I struggled to choose between the Huli Huli Chicken, Kalbi Ribs, and Guava-Soy Bistro Steak. Thanks to advice from our very helpful server, I went with the steak, which came out a perfect medium rare. I was very happy with the choice. In addition to helpful and personable service, our server livened things up by pulling us into the fierce debate on the true origin of the Mai Tai. Some have described Makai as kitschy, and I'd say it definitely is, but in an appropriate way. Kitsch is an essential component of Tiki culture, and Makai pulls it off successfully, blending it with a spectacular location, delicious food, and exotic cocktails.
