I was so enthusiastic to visit this place with the reviews I read and the hype of the 4.5 stars given to this established.
So many reviews stated that the tamales had a generous portion of meat, which is not true. Even though the taste of the chicken filling is good, you have to have a generous portion of the chicken picadillo to enjoy a tamale accompanied with the masa. I will say the masa is well made, unfortunately every piece of corn husk you unwrap has a separate layer of masa. So, once you finish unwrapping it, you will find a very small tamale with a thin layer of chicken if you're lucky.
I didn't think to take pictures at the time. But, if you look at RUDY SALAS review that has a picture of the green chicken chile tamale. Pay attention to the size of the tamale, comparing it to the size of the fork. It's very small.
I also ordered a large raspado de tamarindo. It was a generous portion and it looked so appetizing at plane view. Unfortunately, it was an overload of sugar which overpowered the tamarind. I could not eat it!
I tried the Mexican bread and it was average at best. I do recommend the bolillos!! They were warm, very good right out of the oven. I recommend LA CORONA BAKERY in Norwalk for the best Mexican bread any day barnone.
I also liked the homemade salsa of all things. It was good and not spicy. Perfect for chips!
Mind you, I'm a hard core Mexican that knows how to make tamales. It's just really difficult to find a place with authentic good tamales. I occasionally like to go on the hunt for a place, when I don't feel like making them myself.
They definitely make fresh tamales daily and run out. I assume it's because they don't make big batches.
This place was just not for me. It's overated as a great place for tamales, which it is not!! So, if you're ok with a very small tamale...
Read moreI first have to say that La Moderna it my go to for tamales, in saying this it was really disappointing to have tamales for Christmas morning and not have what I had asked for. I went the Thursday before Christmas and was 12th in line and by the time I got in they only had green pork and cheese with chilies, so I only got 2 dozen of the cheese and chili. The next morning I got there at 5am and was first in line. I have to say that after waiting two hours in the freezing cold it was disappointing to see that the owner summoned his friend that was all the way in the back of the line to the side door and sold him his tamales before they opened, “sucks”. I went in and got my 2 dozen red beef and dozen sweet and dozen chicken verde. On Christmas morning all of the cheese chili tamales ended up being green pork. Unfortunately no one in my family likes pork tamales and they all went into the trash. We searched all two dozen for one cheese with no luck. Just disappointing that they only had two too choose from and the girls couldn’t get my order right. Waste of money, they even raised they price two dollars, at least get it right.. I might have to sample one there in the...
