I am a coffee snob. I never used to drink coffe because of the rancid taste, but that all changed when I was in Hong King teaching a class in emerging physical medical science and I really needed a boost due to jet lag. I decided to choke down a coffee and just tough it out like the salty old firefighter of my past. That morning changed my life as I encountered a mystical flavor from coffee, somehow roasted that day. Being a student of medical research and clinical practice, I decided to research how this can be and I discovered the fabled, fairytale world of magical coffee. I now roast my own coffee and rarely buy anything else. On vacation this chilly and damp Seattle morning, however, my wife and I decided to walk to a coffee shop that has a cool mural on the wall. I knew that I would suffer the misery of old coffee, but I remembered my old salty firefighter lineage and braved the danger before me. Trust your I training and stay alert, they say. My astute training kicked in and I boldly ordered a mocha, knowing that I could recover with counseling as long as my partner could get me out of the danger zone and back to a good view of Puget Sound. Happily, the apprehension, while justified, was unnecessary as the gals at the Birdhouse seem to have discovered the same secret I had found that fateful day in Hong Kong. Maybe they were there learning about coffee, too. Who knows! Anything is possible. Thank you, big crow on the wall! You made my last vacation day a success, and I am contented to return home to to my own coffee. But, I will always sleep well knowing that I can find a tasty mocha when we visit our friends in...
Read moreI have been going to Birdhouse semi regularly for a year now and it has been a staple for my coffee needs. It is a walk up window, with 4-5 benches by the wall. It is a very popular place in the neighborhood. They have a large selection for seasonal drinks and also sell baked goods too. They have a big food menu as well. The coffee is fantastic, they prepare it with great care. The waiting times are not. I have waited around 25 minutes multiple times over the past year for a single order of coffee, which has diminished my experience here. They almost always have a huge queue of online orders, at peak morning hours. You’d like to factor that in if you’re walking up and ordering. We have tried the veggie burrito and salmon bagel but were left unimpressed for the taste and price. Although, the oatmeal was delicious. I hope they’d prioritize walk up...
Read moreEven though I live only two blocks away, it had been a while since we ordered food from Birdhouse. Today, we walked up and noticed that their menu has really expanded since the last time I ordered food about 4 years ago! Today for lunch we ordered Almond Joy and Lemonade drinks, and Firebird and Farmhouse sandwiches. The drinks and sandwiches were extremely good, the ingredients tasted fresh and delicious!!!! The service has always been very friendly and quick (as long as it isn't busy, which it definitely can be)! We had previously had their excellent "super" breakfast burritos. I think The Birdhouse has only gotten better with their expanded menu since I last visited over a year ago only for coffee, and now we are eager to try the other lunch sandwiches offered. Overall, we strongly recommend a visit to this neighborhood...
