Experience Tennessee We used to live near the square in Shelbyville and would visit a Shebyville institution frequently for breakfast or burgers. Today was a special Biscuits & Gravy for us as we revisited Popes Cafe on the square. This iconic diner has been a staple on the square. We ate hamburgers at the counter when our son was young. I even did a cross stitch of this popular storefront. It’s been redecorated by the current owners and Karen was gracious enough t to catch us up on its history. 7 months ago they expanded to the building next door giving them room for a salad bar. Karen was working hard to ensure it was fresh and ready for lunch while we were visiting. Our breakfast was good, served hot and quickly. Karen enjoys her job and her customers. She said the most popular dishes are their hamburgers and the hot roast beef. The Charlie Pride pie sells out quickly, it’s from an old recipe of Mrs. Pope. Plan a visit to Shelbyville to spend some time on their historic square. Admire the beautiful courthouse and the many stores. There is so much to see and do in Bedford County. We just moved here 2 weeks ago. We love small mom and pop businesses. We stumbled across this gem. We walked in and were greeted with a smile. We sat down, and our server was the sweetest person. (Jennifer ). We told her we just moved here and looking for things to do and a hairstylist. She sat down and chatted with us about local places to see. She also gave me information for a hairstylist. Win win. The food.... probably the best home cooking I've had in a while. I had a bacon egg and cheese sandwich with hashbrowns. My husband got the 3 egg omelet with bacon and cheese with 3 pancakes. Now I'm not a pancake person, but I tasted it because Fred said they were so good. 😋 Yep, hands down. I took 1 bite, and I'm hooked. This little place does not disappoint. The sweet tea, reminded me of my dad's tea. Love it ❤️

Only 4 stars on the food because I've only tried one item on the menu. But the chocolate pie is better then the grocery stores so worth a try in my opinion. I'd love to go and try another one of their original menu items. Old style Cafe....reminds me of an old soda jerk place. The mix of locals ,that have been going forever, plus us newbies was adorable. The space though is amazing, you can feel the history. I saw a picture on the wall that suggests it may be a much older place. Loooovee a genuine retro greesy spoon with good recipes and friendly people. A cute place to have a poetry or bingo night!

Don't bother, they lie. They said they were swamped and had 3 tables, said there was an electric problem, asked what we were waiting on....our food. 45 minutes and no food. DONT BOTHER AT ALL. To your reply, sir.

When we first sat down, your waitress passed us by multiple times and then finally realized we were there. The shock on her face let us know she forgot about us. She then needed help with her tablet because what I ordered didn't have a number or a name, and she asked several times, "Are you sure." I was sure. The young man then helped her with the tablet. After about 20 minutes after we ordered, the young man asked, "What are you waiting on?" We told him our food . Then, about another 15 minutes, she told us you were really busy, which when I looked, you had 3 tables and us. Then, about another 10 minutes, she came back and said it was electrical. At 10:30 we were going to give you another 5 minutes since she said you were working on it. We then waited until 10:37 and started to get up, when the waitress said you were still working on it and you would give us 50% off. We said no, thank you, and left. We figured she didn't hit the send button and didn't figure that out until we had sat there for an hour. We sat there long enough for another table to order, get their food, eat, shop, and pay their bill. We were more than patient. That is no way to run your reputable business. You lied to us about what was going on and took no steps to rectify the situation. You, as the business owner, should have spoken to us. There are other...

My husband and I showed up an hour before closing. A young lady came up to us to take our order another lady butted in and said half of our stuff we’re out of we already started cleaning up to close up. We’ll see if we can get you some thing on the menu to eat. We end up with the open faced roast beef it was cold mashed potatoes were a big ball of cold potatoes. I got the corn it was room temperature. My husband got the pinto beans they were room temperature. My husband asked for a piece of pie. The lady started putting up the knife and spatula to serve it,then turned around and asked oh I forgot you wanted a piece of pie don’t you? I said no don’t worry about it I know you’re trying to clean up don’t dirty your stuff we paid $26 for a cold meal we were very disappointed. I had heard great things about this place disappointing that my husband that hardly ever goes out to eat got this kind of service. I will say we will not be back. I have no pictures because we were so disappointed in the place. As I was sitting there, another customer came up, trying to come in to eat with his family. She met him at the door would not let them in. It was about 20 minutes till closing time, so I kind of understand. Her only concern was closing up and getting home. She achieved her goal. She never has to worry about me coming back and holding her...

I have eaten here five times in the last 6 weeks two of those five times were absolutely fantastic both of those times unfortunately were at breakfast. Fantastic breakfast wouldn't recommend any other place! Dinner however, that is a whole other subject the first time we went in they had no steaks except for of course the most expensive one on the menu. Youu are a hole in the wall diner I can't truly believe someone would pay $30 for a steak at your location. The next visit everyone just got burgers or sandwiches because you guessed it they had no steaks again. Also I was told that they have white beans and cornbread or pinto beans and cornbread everyday so far that has not been the case either. The burgers and sandwiches were great the fries as excited as I was when they were put in front of me they were squishy and very bland. The third time I spent $12 with tax on a salad, their chef salad which they advertise to have ham bacon grilled chicken lettuce and tomato. Well you get a very very small amount of chicken and Ham but almost an entire onion on the salad so with that being said I probably will not go back for dinner but will definitely go for breakfast. The three stars is generous because of how good their...
