I was so excited to consume clam strips as it is my favorite food (next to whole fried clams) when at “the beach”. My family is not that into seafood so on the last full day of our vacation I ventured forth to Ship Bottom Shellfish. I ordered and received a beautiful looking plate of the deep fried beauties. Yum, or so I thought. The flavor was overrun by salt. That’s it. Salt. Lots of it. So much so that it was hard to discern the clam flavor at all. The ending note was salt. They were perfectly cooked and looked fantastic, but way too much salt in the batter. I rarely if ever complain about my food when dining out. I don’t want to be bothered with having to deal with negativity even if it is justified. I kept trying the clam strips thinking that I was wrong in my opinion and that they are ok, just outside of my range of acceptable saltiness. Nibble after nibble my tastebuds fired “this is too salty” to my orbitofrontal cortex. I had to act. I actually complained to the waitress. Annabella was nice about it; she said she would let the kitchen know. I ate approximately half the entree and she took the plate with the remaining clams and asked if I wanted something else or perhaps some dessert. I politely declined as she walked off. Now I expected a manager or chef or someone to approach me and apologize or ask for more information or say something like “I tried them and yes, you are correct” or “That’s how we make ‘em” or SOMETHING. But no, I received a bill for the full amount which I paid and also tipped Annabella 20%. I will probably never be back on LBI. If I ever am I will frequent Pinky’s. I don’t appreciate being treated like I was at Ship...
Read moreif i could leave 0 stars, i would. i visted this establishment on Labor Day with 3 others and the experience was terrible. on top of waiting up to 40 minutes for our food, it was disgusting. my friend and i got snow crab legs with 2 sides and 2 others got the fried seafood combo. both of our crablegs came out cold and his “side” of onion rings only included 3. both of the fried seafood platters were disgusting. we were all starving and 2 of my friends decided to eat their food anyway despite their distaste for it. when we tried to send our food back (one seafood combo and one snowcrab) and get it taken off of our bill instead of wait 30 more minutes for recooked food, the manager refused and said that she would call the cops if we did not pay. she also explained that no one else had complained that day so there could be nothing wrong with it. we tried explaining how the seafood combo was not good and overcooked and the manager said she could do nothing about it because there was nothing wrong with the quality of the food and that it was not overcooked. she came to our table with a raw shrimp and pulled it apart before she touched the already cooked shrimp on my friends plate. she then explained that i would not get sick eating cold crab legs. why would i pay up to $50 on one meal only to eat cold food? we ended up having to pay our bill and all of us left still hungry. the manager chased us outside and come up to our car to tell us that we were on camera and that we were never allowed in any of their establishments again. i have never seen a restaurant act in this way and not try their best to do whatever they can for...
Read moreWe have made numerous attempts to eat at ship bottom shellfish over the years. You can't join an online wait list, so, you have to schelp over, put in your name, and wait... for one of 9 tables. This would be worth it if it was the old causeway, or dock and claw.... this was not worth it. Appetizers were fantastic, Buffalo Calamari was magically tender, crunchy, and sauced all at once. The crab stuffed artichoke hearts were initially from a can, and never lost their tinned flavor. The scallop appetizer was delicious. But, it was 4 medium to small (20-30/lb) sea scallops that did taste local and fresh. But. Small. Not satisfying. Inadequate for the price. Dinner was less satisfying. The crab stuffed flounder featured a piece of thin and dry flounder with less flavor than tap water, awkwardly snaked around a crab and cheese filling. It was inedible for two of our guests, and the wait staff never even asked if there was something wrong with the full plates returning to the kitchen. The swordfish special was much better, but still not great. Someone in the kitchen is confused by how artichokes as an ingredient work... and making tinned artichokes unappealingly tough... in any form... but especially for prices over 35 dollars a plate... shouldn't happen... it was really a let down after 6 years of trying to get in. If you want a good seafood meal... head elsewhere... the flounder snaked like an eel around a ramekin was anything but what I expect from a highly rated seafood restaurant. I think people get lost in the atmosphere and forgive the culinary mediocrity. This place is the working definition...
